Where to Find Snow around Melbourne This Weekend?

Hi everyone!

My wife are coming from QLD to Melbourne tomorrow for a few days - just wondering what the chances of seeing snow in the surrounding mountains are? We're hiring a car so will be able to drive anywhere within 2-3 hours. We didn't want to go to a resort as we're not going skiing and didn't want to have to hire all the gear.

I know the weather is meant to be fairly warm this weekend so I'm worried that there won't be snow around places like Mt Baw Baw or Mt Donna Buang. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

Check the weather cams (https://www.mountbawbaw.com.au/reports/webcams/). It looks snowy at the moment

You'll probably need snow chains. Make sure to check the T&C's for the car hire.

Lake mountain is the closest to Melbourne and also has a nice drive up through Marysville to get there. https://www.lakemountainresort.com.au

    Snow Cams here: https://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/vic/lakemtn/index.…

Looks like Saturday and Sunday this weekend are sold out however so you make sure you book an entry pass before going. https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=908493&

  • Thanks for the suggestions - however we didn't want to go somewhere we have to book a pass, any places like that? We're happy to just go for a drive and stop somewhere along the way…

    • Not at any distance from Melbourne where petrol will cost less than a pass. And even then it would be pretty tricky. Snow still only falls on the top of mountains down here and nearly all the roads up to these mountains have costs. The main places I can think of that would be free would be to drive to Dinner Plain or Mt Buffalo but they are 4-5 hours from Melbourne…

  • heard you can go to Mt Donna Buang without a pass

    • Yes, but no snow ATM.

    • Donna bang is very hit and miss, much like Mt Macedon. It has to be the tail end of a wet cold snap. His only decent chance are lake mountain or Mt Buller.

I think if you're coming tomorrow for a few days, go to Lake Mountain on Friday or Monday (as above, weekends are booked out). It will be much quieter than on weekends anyway.

Do yourself a favour and stop by Innocent Bystander in Healesville for lunch/dinner.

Just an update - we went to Mt St Gwinear last Friday and it was absolutely brilliant. Hired snow chains but didn't need them - we got to the mountain about 11am. There was hardly anybody there, plenty of snow and it was bright, sunny and warm. We loved it so much! Would definitely recommend.
