Ocean Chef Salmon Portions (Skin On) 1kg $22 @ Woolworths

251

The extremely deep, cold waters of the Norwegian fjords provide naturally favourable conditions for Atlantic Salmon, so it's from these sea farms we source these rich, moist fillets.

To fully appreciate the distinctive flavour, pair salmon with a simple combination of olive oil and lemon, or for something more exotic, Asian flavours such as ginger and lemongrass.

    Tassie Salmon or gtfo

farmed salmon that isn't native to the area?

      • native to my belly

Also a good ingredient for miso soup.

  • the Norwegian fjords

Volkswagen is more popular in Norway.

  • a simple combination of olive oil and lemon

    Don't forget the dill.

I'm thinking the environmental laws in Norway are stronger (actually work) more so than in Tasmania. Or maybe having Scomo as PM made me cynical about safe practices here.

On that basis, I will proceed to fill my new chest freezer with this Norweigen stuff.

And, thank you to the OP.

send the future of this country offshore

Or don’t you care like most?

      • +1

        It's already offshore.

I think either is fine, the Tasmanian fish has not had to hitch-hike as far, though smoked fish is nicer sometimes from (Costco) overseas. The local fish can seem oilier…

    • Smoked fish is linked to increase risk of cancer

    $22 is too expensive.
I bought 10kg when it was $14 at Coles last Oct and plenty in my freezer now.
It was $18 last year in Aug, 22.22% inflation.

Is this Farmed Salmon or Deep Water Wild Salmon?

    • from these sea farms

  • +4

As all Salmon Farmed Fish (both in Tassie and overseas) add colouring pellets to the fish food to make the fish that pink colour, I will give this a miss

    • +4

have seen wild caught salmon in costco in the frozen aisle
completely different texture and taste to farmed
      farmed more flakey/ buttery

      • +1

Came here just to say this. Sockeye salmon from Costco is the best frozen salmon you can by. The only other way to get sockeye salmon at the majors is the john West fillets at Coles but they are more expensive per kg than costco

    • It's not 'colouring pellets', it's astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant naturally produced by algae. The fish would normally get it in their diet by eating krill, shellfish or crabs. It's no different to supermarket bread adding folic acid supplements because white wheat has lost all its nutrients.

The reason you should avoid all farmed fish (and especially basa fish) is because they grow in filthy water and are given constant doses of antibiotics to compensate.

Farmed salmon is better than many other fish on the shelf - there is noone monitoring wild fish for microplastics and mercury, and basa fillets are disgusting

      • The carotenoids given to farmed Salmon is from manmade pellets.

Wild Salmon Get Their Color From Eating Shrimp and Krill. Without shrimp or krill, farmed salmon can't consume naturally-occurring carotenoids. They don't feed farmed Salmon Shrimp and Krill.

In order to produce a fish that resembles wild salmon, salmon farmers typically use corn and soy pellets that are supplemented with astaxanthin. Shrimp and krill for wild and synthetic astaxanthin for farmed.

        • It doesn't matter if they are from manmade pellets. It doesn't make them "toxic dye" or "colouring". They are vitamins, the very same that people can buy in the pharmacy

  • +1

    Farmed salmon with toxic dye

  • I've bought this before .. bag of odd off cuts … noooooo.. 😣 .. !!
