Very Slow Speed Connect to Work VPN

Only started recently I have difficulties to connect to my work VPN (Host IP is TPG/AAPT).

I am on Vodafone 100Mbps NBN FTTP, speed is stable at 100Mbps day and night. I never had any complaint about the speed.

  • When connect directly to work VPN in Windows 10, the speed is extremely slow and Remote Desktop is almost no response.
  • After I set up a retail (Nord) VPN in the router and connect to a random Sydney/Melbourne based server, then connect to my work VPN in Windows 10, the speed is fast.
  • I also tried to use my Optus mobile hotspot to connect to my work VPN and speed is Okay.

Anyone know what could be the issue when connect directly to Work VPN? Thanks all for your inputs in advance.

  • Not sure. You'd imagine it'd be the other way around (if you're diverting traffic through Nord first, then it shouldn't take less time, you'd think).

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps your work has got their network set up in such a way that it doesn't try to do 'sensitive stuff' like e.g. sync network drives when it's detected that you're connecting over Nord? One of my old employers had something like that set up.

Thank you. My work IT team advised it was my Vodafone issue. So I will keep redirecting the traffic via Nord VPN for the time being.

I vaguely recall that sometimes when using a VPN (such as Nord) you end up having a better network routing path to a destination than when you don't. Hence the better performance when using Nord.

You can know for sure by doing a traceroute for each of these and comparing them. If you share them make sure to xxxxxx out any of the identifying information for yourself and your company. Vodafone's routing is probably poor.

      • Thank you noz and newbo. I will check out the routing trace.

  • All I can think is that the ISP your work uses and Vodafone don't have a good interconnect (ie congested?). So using NORD goes via a dog leg path which is long but not congested.

You can use tracert in a Windows CMD to trace the network path from you to your work VPN endpoint it will attempt to show response time. You could do it both ways and ask your IT team.

Vodafone could also be meanies and be rate limiting your particular VPN (but not Nord) on their network to reduce the impact of WFH users.

    • Thank you for your advice.

Could be a variety of different issues so best to play the elimination game

Ask your IT if your VPN is configured as a full or split tunnel, a Split Tunnel VPN will only route traffic bound for internal subnets over itself and to your Organisations VPN Server, whereas a Full Tunnel will route all traffic over it.

    Split Tunnel Routing Example;

Say you browse to google.com.au, it will go out your Vodafone FTTP connection and not go over VPN

If you try connect to an Internal Remote Desktop, it will go over VPN

You can check routing or latency via Looking Glass or do a traceroute as by another user

    https://portal.vodafone.com/web/lookingglass

I doubt VPN is being rate limited by Vodafone, most organisations use SSL VPN which functions over an encrypted stream via Port 443 which will be nearly unidentifiable from visiting a normal HTTPS site

    Next, you mention the following

"After I set up a retail (Nord) VPN in the router and connect to a random Sydney/Melbourne based server, then connect to my work VPN in Windows 10, the speed is fast."

Have you tried with the NordVPN client on the Windows 10 device itself? Is it the same result?

    • Hi, thank you for your explanation, appreciated for the details. Work VPN was configured as Split Tunnel. HTTP browsing does not go through the VPN. Remote desktop traffic routed to VPN, which is very slow. I will check routing/latency via Lookingglass.

I am unable to set up NordVPN or any VPN client on the Work Windows 10 device because the security setting doesn't allow end user to install any program or change settings.

  • Are you on a 100/40 or a 100/20 NBN plan?

    • I used to have 100/40, but Vodafone changed it to 100/20 on 24 June 2022.

  • Just FYI everyone I moved my service to Launtel and worked perfect now
