Refill Gas at Service Stations - Prefilled Vs Fill on The Spot

Some services stations offer gas bottle swap, either on prefilled or fill on the spot from their huge gas tanks.
The prefilled will cost more than the fill on the spot ones. Is it because prefilled ones contain more gas?

They all contain the same amount of gas. The reason prefilled will cost more is for the storage of them and the cost of eventually replacing the bottles.

I'm sure these are minor factors, but 100% the reason prefilled costs more is because people are prepared to pay more for the convenience.

The prefilled ones cost more because they sold as safe bottles. (Safety inspected & expire date checked) Were personal bottles are not checked as well and not guarantee by the seller of the gas.

So if you gas bottle is expired, just go and swap. If you gas bottle is within 10 years,go refill.

The cost of gas is just 1/4 of the cost of the refill, the rest is labour

The current Aramco spot price for propane is approx A$0.97c per kg - about A$8.25 for a 9kg bottle fill.
And people complain about the mark-up of petrol!

      • Yeah, gas refill is around $25 but swap is around $33.

Love the NZ system of LPG refills, they charge by the kg. So you can top up your bottles any time and only pay for what went into the tank!

    • It is self serve in NZ?

      • Nope. Just like refilling here isn't self-serve.

Sometimes refilling is better, especially for caravanners etc who have a specific mount for the bottle. Noting worse than going ms swapping the bottle and finding out it won’t mount back in the same spot because the bottle is a bit different.

  • We used to refill but a lot of servos won't refill after 7pm. Became easier to just swap.

  • You just keep refilling your own gas tank
Until your gas tank becomes too old then pay a few dollars more to swap it.

I think there is a certain age before the tanks are considered non safe and can't be swapped. So double check that and make sure you swap them before it gets to that stage

You can swap them at any age.

      • Yes you can swap whenever you want. But it's more expensive than a refill

I've been knocked back for an exchange once because my bottle was too old and therefore deemed unsafe. This was in NSW a few years ago so I don't know if laws are different in other states (or if the guy was pulling my leg)

        • Definitely pulling your leg, the purpose of the swap program is to weed out the old bottles.

Just go when its busy, i've never seen a servo attendant do more than observe from inside the shop.

Where is this, and how much of a price difference? Every time I've looked at refilling it's been more than a Bunnings swap would cost.

    • In Sydney. Refill is around $25 but swap is around $33. Bunnings is better for the swap.

There’s not a single service station within 5km of me who fills gas bottles anymore.
They only do swaps because it takes too long to fill the bottles.

S&G cost more because it's a third party business to the service station,
If the statation can do it themselves they can sell cheeper and make more profit.

You also get more gas from a refill most refills are not measured they just pump in gas until it comes out the vent screw which is normally around 9kg.

Prefilled are all measured to exactly 8.5kg

If your bottle is getting close to end date swap otherwise it's much better to refil.

If you need new bottles best to check gumtree or market place you can pick them up for a fraction of the cost of a new one if is out of date swap it at a servo they never check especially late at night.
