    8 out of 10 cats?

  • Is the cat8 worth the price if I'm using it for a TV (close to the modem) and have FTTC connection.

    • Pretty sure 4k video won't max out 100mbps so cat 5 would suffice

      • It's currently using my wifi and often lags.

        • +4

Anything cat 5a and up will do the job. Some cords will say what speed they're rated for exactly, as there is a range within the ratings. Look for 100mpbs+

Cat8 is overkill but if this length is adequate then yes it'll work

        • It's currently using my wifi and often lags.

My Firestick have no problem with 4k streaming.

          AussieBB 100M, TPLink Deco M5

Are you talking about network files or 4k streaming?

For a short distance with 1Gb network, either CAT5e or CAT6 will be fine. No reason to go with flat cables if everything is going behind your TV.

      • My current wall connection has about 35metre cat5 running from the curb (FTTC) to my wall. Could that be the reason for my shitty speed?

        • It should be fine, as long as the cable is not faulty. I would choose CAT6 for this, but NBNco is probably looking to save a few bucks.

If you get a bad sync speed with FTTC I would just complain to your ISP and make it NBNco's problem.

      • No reason to go with flat cables if everything is going behind your TV.

I have flat cables from one side of the house to the other side around 30m, before I use ethernet over power OK but not great.

White flat cable didn't see it at all unlike blue round cable.

Chances are your TV has a 100mbps port. Unless it's a newer TV.

Just get Cat6. It does up to 10Gbit and is cheap. Cat8 is very rare and 99.99% of equipment won't even be able to go fast enough to necessitate it.

      • Yep, cat 6 is just fine and cheap.

        • +1

Or go cat 7. It's dirt cheap. The advantage I saw when getting new cables was I found my old cable was faluty

@Raj09: If i was running cables in walls i would go with the highest quality i could afford (cable thickness)

          • @Raj09: I'd read that Cat7 isn't a real standard so I didn't include it.

    • $1 per meter is all you need for the average home user, as a price guide IMHO

    • TV's only have 100mbit port you need a USB to Gb network adaptor first

    • No, because this thing wont give you 40Gbit (5GB/s), you need a modem/router/switch that can deliver 40Gbit and a port on the other end that can receive and process 40Gbit. If you dont have either it will default to the slowest thing you have be it 100Mbit (12.5MB/s) or 1Gbit (125MB/s).

NBN as far as I know only has 1Gbit port and most consumer products eg. TVs also only have 1Gbit ports.

There are very few consumer grade anything that can do 40Gbit over ethernet and they are extremely expensive > $2000, its mainly for servers or dedicated work stations.

    • Depends on your TV's ethernet port, for example LG C1 only have a 100m eth port, and FTTC only supports up to 100mbps anyways?

    • Most TV's don't have gigabit ports anyway.

  • Whats the use case for cat 8?

      OnlyFans

    • When you need 1 more than 7

    • When you have 10gbe home network as I do, and optical isn't an option to connect your 3 switches together!.Add all my nas,s have 40gbe network cards in em and use rj45.

Didn't even know there was Cat7

4 Double unshielded twisted pairs (UFTP) of ultra bare copper core

CAT7 & CAT8 require shielding, or they are not CAT7/8 cables. Of course, words are free and the seller can easily change the listing to read "4 double individually shielded twisted pairs of ultra 99.9999% pure copper core with extra outer shielding (SF/FTP) hand-rolled and flattened by certified virgins."

    • whoa

      • sold!

    No 40gb interfaces use RJ45.

      I bought the hdmi 2.1 8k 60hz 3m last deal. They're full 2.1 rated. Good quality. I'm running 4k 120Hz 4.4.4 just fine. Highly recommended.

    • Yes

    • 99.9%**

    • The graphic for that cable says it's 500Mbps, which makes no sense. Further down it claims to be 10Gbps. The whole description is written in jibberish.

  • Any chance of a displayport 1.4 3m or longer?
