Pretty bad deal due to annual fee

Last time I took up and churned a Citi card (Nov 2021), they pro-rata refunded most of the AF after holding the card for 2 months. They should be able to refund the unused portion if you cancel early, just talk to them on live chat or over the phone to try and negotiate it.

Even better now owned by NAB, NAB has the best pro-rata policy of all banks I've found.

      • Good to know Citi did that too and not just NAB. Makes this a better deal than the 150k Velocity from the personal loan then I think.

      • This is news to me
        So they refund now?

        • They don't provide it if you just cancel, but I didn't have any issue getting a refund / cheque by requesting a refund via live chat, it was really seamless. Only issue is that they generally send the refund via a cheque rather than removing it from the ending balance.

I don't think I've ever been denied for an AF pro-rata from any provider and I've churned pretty much all of them. I always just call or live chat before cancelling and they generally give one.

          • @doweyy: can confirm Citi does pro-rata. I recently closed a card and got refund in mail

        • Just wanted to note that I signed up with the intention of reaching the spend amount within a month and then asking for a refund.

I didn't read the fine print and just saw the following:

          • Citibank will request your velocity details 8 weeks from meeting the spend criteria.
          • The 100,000 Velocity points will be credited within 10 weeks from receipt of details
          • Your card must remain open for the Velocity points to be awarded

So just FYI all in all you may end up only getting 6 months of the annual fee by the time the points are sorted.

Citi are good, they approved for the 60k bonus points and no annual fee on the card whilst a major bank who's first letter of their name starts with Westpac told me to get stuffed.

    Their app sucks though

  • Usual 12 month waiting period from last Citi card closure?

    • Citi is usually 6 months.

    • I've been accepted barely 2 months between cards from memory

edit: was 6 months actually lol

      • How long did approval take for you?

        • +1

I haven't applied for this yet - I meant accepted for Citi credit cards

but generally Citi takes about a week from memory. One time after a week I called them up then they asked for income verification and it was approved the day after

  • You used to be able to get 100K Velocity points for a reduced annual fee of $99 (albeit a different product offering and $3000 spend). Won't sign up for this; would rather 60K points for no annual fee.

Also worth noting no Google Pay/Wallet.

    • They do pro-rata the annual fee back if that helps. Two work colleague got theirs back from the Qantas card.

      • Still won't pay $300 annual fee; it's far too much when there are better options out there. Also do they? Because I cancelled my old Citibank credit card about ten months after I opened it and got nothing back.

  • Are the bonus points strictly for velocity or can they be transferred to krisflyer?

  • Can the 100,000 be used to deduct from card balance/how much does it translate to in $$ using it to pay the card balance? Tried looking but (somewhat understandably?) That sort of info doesn't seem to be available without already owning the card/having access to the rewards portal.

    • No. You don’t earn Velocity points with this card. You earn Citi Rewards points.

    • no cant

generally the only points that can be against balances (likely at poor value) are the bank's own points, not the ones where you get Qantas or Velocity points.

  • Anyone applied recently? Wondering how long approval takes

  • I applied for this yesterday and was approved today.

Spent $4k on Beem It and Afterpay around two weeks ago and received the Velocity membership number email today.

The bonus points has now been credited into my VFF account.

Excellent follow up posts, truly excellent.

So no submission of Velocity number until the email they sent you on 26/8?

  • If you use the link through finder, it is $150 for the first year. The link the OP posted is 300$ for first year.

    https://www1.citibank.com.au/CardsOnline/citi-premier-cashba…

edit: above is 600$ cashback, OP is 100k velocity points but 700$ in gift cards (with +100 VP more)

    • Yup its a different one!

      • Isn't the CC fee only $150 if you spend over $48k per year?

        • That's the following years.

  • What are the eligible purchases with this card? It gets quite confusing for me?

    • Eligible purchases exclude Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, interest, fees, refunds, Chargebacks and spend on a Linked Diners Club Card.
If you have any specific purchase you can ask them on chat !
