WDTV Live - Original Version - $98 - Office Works

45

The original and the best as far as I am concerned. I have 3 of these and I would be rich if I got commission on all the ones bought on my recommendation. I like the old school menu system - I think the new one is crap.
Perfect for playing every format, including Full HD mkv 'backup' files.
I haven't seen these available for months and had to buy one second hand.

Not an awesome price - but very hard to find now.

  • Standard pricing for the old version. If it was $99 for the new version, then would be a bit more exciting.. Old version too many drawbacks and no inbuilt WIFI means no for me..

  • +2

Seems like the going price for this is around $98.
Here is a link to the WD Live at JB - http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

So what makes this old hardware better than the new? A friend of mine has it and I thought it was rather basic and a lot of formats are not supported, my basic TV USB input supports more…

    • +2

There is no possible way you could be talking about the WDTV Live if you're talking about a lack of compatibility. I bought one of these a few years ago because it plays just about everything. mkv, xvid, divx, ape, flac, etc.

Btw, I agree with bchliu - $99 for the new version would be more exciting :) It has a different User Interface that's more responsive than the older WDTV Live.

      • you're not wrong about the 'just about everything'. It does not handle RM/RMVB format.

        • -3

i agree. no rmvb support therefore mine isnt used

    • Your friend is mistaken.

  • +3

The old hardware was great…I still have one but for me the newer version is better. Wifi built-in and a much better interface. $69 would be a better price for clearing these out.

If you don't know about B-Rad's alternative firmware for the WDTV/WDTV Live, here's the link…

    http://wdlxtv.com/

I prefer B-Rad's firmware for one reason. If you access the network on the old WDTV Live a little too quickly, it locks up the network interface and you can't access the network without a power-off… This network lockup is a feature in Ubuntu too…

    New version cheaper here: http://www.megabuy.com.au/western-digital-tv-live-hd-media-p…

So its worth getting? Was just about to grab the new LIVE now.

    • Cheaper - WTF - $92.80 + 15.95 delivery = FAIL. Plus, it's Megabuy… but imho i think its better to spend a little extra and get the "Live Streaming" version with built-in wifi. I only have around 1 or 2 bars of reception and it streams fine over wireless. I will probably end up using Ethernet over Power to hook up eventually once i see a good deal, but the menus and feel is great. The other reason is that these units come with 2 usb ports - without a wired network, you'd lose one of these for a wireless USB.

  • how are these for playing BluRay backups in 3D. i.e. hdmi 1.4 etc

    And ISOs, mt2s?

My old Popcorn Hour doesn't recognise 3D ISOS & mt2s files, but 3D HSBS & OU ok.

    • I play 3D movies on my old WDTV. It works beautifully.

      Please do share then.

  • There are mountain of these at jb with this price. They are not hard to find.

Its far much better to spend a bit more and get a Visson Media Player or a Geniatech. Visson Box - http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/603688 . I own WDTV and it is kindergarten stuff compared to the other boxes I have listed.

  • Not a good deal. I could get this down $90 at JB Hifi (4 months ago) after asking for better price.

  • no deal… I got the Wifi version for $86 a few months ago…

    • where from?

  • This is standard pricing now

  • +3

I paid 94 bucks to OW 2 years ago for this WD Live player original version.

  • +1

No deal. I bought mine for about $45 a year ago. Price matched to one of JB's opening sale of $50. :)

$98 is pretty much a standard price nowadays.

    • +1

I feel like this should have been shared with us about year ago?????!!!!!!

      • it was in fact a grand opening sale of a new branch.
and a deal was posted on OZB.

Many of us made other brands/stores honor the same price since it's the same product - and got it.
I bought 2 for me and 1 for my brother.

I went in to Officeworks and asked for the best price they could give me. Got it for $80 last November.

Does this player support mkv file?

    • -1

Some of these older players miss a few formats like FLV and MKV

      • +1

You dont even know WDTV Lives than

    • -1

      Yes it supports mkv perfectly

  • While these players certainly have a good reputation any of the latest generation of players are much better and aren't far off this price. The new Realtek 1186 and Sigma something chipsets can dual boot into android, output a 3d signal, has an optional tuner and can take an internal hdd. That they're so generic, many will be identical except the brand, means there'll be plenty of firmware options.

    • +1

      Rutger,

You'd be recommending the likes of the HDPro X6 tho its on Android 2.2 and about $220. Anything else you say?

      thanx

      • No.. But you can get the latest Android on a stick - the MK802 for $78 that can do just about everything. Runs ICS, has a MALI chip etc etc

        http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/74-mk802-android-micro-pc…

There are a lot of good options out there if you are willing to look.

        • mm, don't think you'll be playing a 25gb BD 3D ISO with DTS thru that! Tho not a bad start.

If anyone wants to buy one of these cheap with the WDLXTV Live firmware on it, I'm happy to part with mine for $50 (paid $100 new), or $75 (plus postage) with a working WiFi dongle that plugs into one of the USB ports. Only gave this up when I moved to an XBMC box with a built in BD-ROM.

Possibly the easiest method of payment is by COD via Australia Post, which allows you to pay when you pick up the goods from the post office, and the postage cost can be included in the price.

Send me a PM if interested.

Why would anyone neg someone trying to offer an honest and I would say generous bargain for an item that lots of people are obviously interested in? Jealousy??

  • man these still around 100 bux pfft

  • no RMVB,it's more a weakness of the product, still a deal for everyone with huge download quota that download MKV files.

    • RMVB Isnt a widely used format

      • RMVB is hugely popular in asia.

  • Hey folks, I'm a technology tragic and could do with some advice. If a get a WDTV, can I save my recorded movies stored on my Austar Mystar hard drive. This would be great if possible to free up my Mystar hard drive. Thanks in advance!

    • No, you would need an external hard disk to transfer them (that is IF you can transfer anything from your Austar Mystar HDD)
