AmEx Qantas Credit

Hi guys,

Just like many people 2 years ago I had a domestic return flight to Perth cancelled and refunded Qantas credit.

Tried to book a return flight to Singapore just then but the lady on the phone told me she has to check with another team to see if the credit can be used booking international flights.

I read the email they sent through to me and remembering asking the lady that helped me with refund two years ago, nowhere it mentions I can’t use it for international flights.

Has anyone tried to book international flights using Qantas credit refunded by Amex ?

  • yeah there shouldn't be any limitations on where the flight should originate and go.

Possibly with code shares (i know Virgin restricted code share flight redemptions for a while).
but credit should have pretty much unlimited use.
I'm in the same boat with Virgin.

    • Thanks for the reply.

Amex just called me and asked me to pay extra because of this Qantas policy that tax thingy doesn’t carry over from domestic to international. 🤦‍♂️I’m calling BS but the rep will send me the policy details

      • There may be additional taxes and carrier fees imposed, but that should be asborbed into the total amount

        • Yeh that’s my thinking. They basically said instead of say $800 your credit becomes $700 when changing to an international route. My question to them was I paid $800 and lost $100 for what 😂

  • +1

I had similar issue a few months back - ended up keeping my credit for another time since have until end of 2023 to book and use it up. The Amex card is long cancelled. They also needed to come back to me after asking another team since it wasn't as simple as picking something on their travel website to book.

Originally was domestic flight (MEL-CNS) but was looking to use up for NZ trip.

However because when I had booked the original flights it wasn't the cheapest fare bucket but the slightly flexible one instead, the new flights had to also had to be the same and couldn't just use it for the cheapest tickets.

    • I’m happy to pay the extra given my flight originally was around $800 domestic and the new fare is $900 (on the Amex website). The problem is they asked me to pay like $180 more because of this tax thing and they quoted me a higher price..I called them out on this and they started mumbling… waiting for a call back

      • Don't remember any extra taxes to add. Ask them if the price would match their website and if not why
