nbn Antenna Upgrade Scam?

OK I'm way too suspicious these days…

Anyway, just got a text: A Hills Technician on behalf of NBN needs to perform an upgrade to your NBN roof antenna (yes I have FW). etc etc and links to https://www.hillstechnicalservices.com.au/ which looks like a legit website.

Spoke to my ISP ABB who have no notification of any NBN works?

What say ye all, scam or legit?

definitely a scam. i'd lock the gate and let the guard dogs loose in the yard to deter the miscreants

They’re going to steal your electricity!

      Wirelessly.

If a tech turns up do not sign anything and do not let them in until you have verified that it will not cost you anything and they are from NBN.

My area recently had NBN FW antenna upgrades due to using a new frequency spectrum. Mine was not a selected property.

    I'm guessing it's legit.

  • Hills haven't made this easy. Looks like they've done the website in a hurry; their technical skills probably reflect that too. Having said that, Hills been serving the healthcare industry for a long time that I have been in the industry(almost 15 years). They provide patient entertainment system for healthcare which is hills.com.au . hillstechnicalservices.com.au looks like one of their extended arm done in a hurry as I could see on the website their support enquiries email goes back to a different domain(original company) which is a number one warning sign when it comes to security etc..I would do more checks

Make sure to pay with iTunes gift cards

  • OK thanks all. They sent a further text saying 'Unfortunately the NBN appointments on the 3/8 have been filled. We will contact you in the future if another appointment becomes available."

Still not sure but I suspect they are probably legit. No biggie as the NBN is working fine so I'll be ready for the next time they call.

Hills did a custom fixed wireless install on behalf of NBN for a family member's place in Gippsland (SE Victoria), and were contacting me directly to schedule.

    Took a while for the job to be finished and at the time they used +61 409 756 526, +61 438 669 447, +61 408 570 407 and +61 438 667 618 for the scheduling texts and used 1300723585 for callbacks.

The techs at the time were based in Cranbourne, and said Hills had a lot of head contracts for SE Melbourne/Victoria and in QLD.

Not sure at all about this specific request, but hopefully the info above helps to verify if legit or not.

Thanks, yeah I rang them today and they seem legit. Apparently it's part of an NBN hardware upgrade rollout. I missed out this time though so will hopefully get in on the next round.

  • Is this for the Internet V2.x that I've read so little about? O^O

    hashtag tongueincheek

    • haha, nope NBN have been upgrading their FW network this year apparently so they need to replace the antenna so it will go 'up to' 100Mbps… but I don't think ABB offer FW at that speed so I'm not sure what it iwll get me other than an upgraded antenna. I've booked in to get it done today so I'll let you know this arvo.

      • ISPs have to wait for nbn to allow 100Mbps on fixed wireless again and potentially 250Mbps.

nbn will use the very latest 5G technology to vastly extend the range, speed and capacity of its existing Fixed Wireless network, while reducing latency to deliver the best possible customer experience.

$750 million investment to 5G-enable nbn® Fixed Wireless to deliver faster speeds to regional Australia

        • Cheers. Turned into a massive fail anyway. We live on a property with two houses (same address), so the contractor came out and replaced the antenna then came inside to change the NTD and noticed that the numbers on the NTD were different from the ones on his work order. It looks like when NBN initially installed the FW gear for the two houses they lumped them both under the same address without differentiating 'unit 1 from unit 2' so to speak. In effect they had my name on the workorder but the neighbours NTD. Apparently this stuff-up was beyond the scope of Erikson to remedy so the contractor had to reinstall the old gear and pray to the NBN God's that they will get their act together at some point in the future. So I'm no worse off than I was before which is something I guess.

          • @EightImmortals: Oh man, that sucks. My folks place has two connections on the NBN database too - (satellite for the main address, and FW for "House 1, 123 Address Street". Causes similar issues.
