Dog Drinking from a Public Water Fountain/Bubbler

Is it commonplace to allow dogs to drink from an outdoor water fountain designed for humans? Do you think this is acceptable or unacceptable?

Just saw a woman with a large dog on a leash, press this bubbler for her dog and allow it to jump up on it's hind legs and drink from it.

    Yuck!

There should be a separate section for dogs.

    • +1

Yes, I've seen those ones with the section near the bottom, this one doesn't have one.

Had words with a dog owner who insisted on lifting a small dog up to drink from a water fountain that had an attached bowl section for dogs. She was adamant that her dog wouldn't drink from the bowl. I insisted that it was a health hazard as children frequently used it.

It was located at the local beach.

This was more about anthropomorphism; she didn't see her dog as an animal.

        • I'd like to think I could have confronted the owner, but who am I kidding I'm generally a conflict avoiding wimp/beta male. 😔

    • I remember that episode of Family Guy too.

    • +2

lol im sure some mouths are dirtier than a dog's

      • I have seen dogs sniff around and lick the same area where another dog had defecated upon moments earlier.

        • -1

Oh C'mon now, I think we've all done that

          • @ozbjunkie: Mods how can I delete someone else's comment? :P

    • I've seen what happens to some of these late at night and assume all have had some exposure to at least some urine. Hopefully not worse.

Dog slobber? No my jig, but not the thing that concerns me the most.

I would never touch an outdoor water fountain like that ever so doesn't matter to me.

I have seen ones with another tap at the bottom for pets though which makes sense.

    • +2

I won't be from now on!

    • I wouldn't touch them when I was in highschool, can't imagine outdoor/public ones being any more sanitary.

  • +2

    Unacceptable. Very unacceptable.

    • What makes it arguably worse (I forgot to mention) is the fountain is located in a kids playground…🤦‍♂️

      • +7

Disgusting. I like dogs, but some people who own them think dogs are people. They are not.

  • +1

Yikes, at least with the old ones there was a tap at the bottom and I have seen people use that before.

I generally do not use these public utilities though.

Dumb question, but are these low flow these days? I would allow it if you could press the button and have the dog sitting at the base of the fountain.

  • +2

I have never touched a bubbler since highschool for this very reason. Yuck

    • So you've seen it before then? I was speechless when I saw it…

  • +1

Normally i let the water run for a bit before i start drinking….

i kiss my dog all the time so it's probably fine..

    • +4

But do you kiss random dogs too?

      • +1

Have you asked the dog if they mind sharing with humans??

    • +2

      Toxodogmosis

      • what?

  • +4

Wait till you hear about public toilets.

    • +4

Wow, I guess dogs will drink anything!

    • +2

Not all of us drink from public toilets.

    • Especially the ones with wicker toilet seats.

  • +2

Is that woman's name Karen? I think I know her.

  • +1

    Its been happening for decades…

I think your lucky to find a park with a tap or bubbler that works.

  • -5

Where is a picture of the 2 dogs (b1tch and the large dogs)?

  • +2

Yuck she let a dog drink from a bidet

  • +1

Did the dog's mouth touch the water outlet, or just the water/stand?
Because if it didn't touch the water outlet, what's the issue?

    • +2

I was too far away to determine whether there was actual contact, but it was licking/lapping up the water pretty close to where it was coming out of the bubbler as it didn't have much pressure. I can only assume a dog doesn't have the control or knowledge to not touch it with it's tongue? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just saw a woman with a large dog on a leash, press this bubbler for her dog and allow it to jump up on it's hind legs and drink from it.

If you think this is the 'worse' that happens to a public bubbler, have I got some stories for you.

  • +4

There are portable drinking bottles for dogs nowadays.

The irony is I wouldn't want my dogs drinking from dog dedicated drinking stations or shared water bowls either.

    • Yeah, when I googled it, all I found was people saying dogs shouldn't drink from shared bowls anyway because they can make each other sick too.

      • Possible but unlikely. Dogs get yearly immunization shots against common viruses.

  • +2

Just be grateful that she wasn't washing a small dog's butt at the bubbler. Accept blessings wherever they come.

    • Have my thoughts and prayers.

  • +1

I've seen what some humans do to these late on Friday and Saturday nights. Haven't touched them since leaving school for this reason alone. Throw dogs into the mix and it's a lifetime ban for me using these bacteria and virus riddled devices.

Nope. No thanks. Not gonna happen.

  • Most responsibe dog owners would consider their dogs water needs on a walk and bring water with them or know the area.

  • May not necessarily be acceptable but I wouldn't think sharing a fountain with a dog would be any worse than sharing with someone with say, Covid or Hepatitis 🤷‍♀️

  • I saw another dog owner letting their dog drink from the fountain, but at least this owner held their dog down with the leash so it could only lap up the water as it ran down the archway/curved column as the owner held down the bubbler.
