Gift Card Purchase Problems on Amazon

I'm having a lot of problems buying the 10% off Google Play gift cards on Amazon.

Every time I buy one of these cards, my account somehow gets flagged that I am a potential victim of an ATO scam. My order then shows a status of "Scheduled" and after a couple of hours, I get a call from an Amazon rep asking me why I'm buying the gift cards & asking me whether I'm being scammed.

After my confirmation that I'm not being scammed, the Amazon rep then says that he'll process the order & I then get the email with the link to get the gift card code. If I then try to click on the link, I get an error message saying that the card is not valid & I should contact the retailer from where I purchased the gift card & mention the error code EGIFT_IRE3_504.

The first time this happened was on Sunday, and I then spent 4 days trying to get Amazon to fix this issue. Amazon first told me to contact Google Play. After 3 days of back and forth with a Google rep, they finally said that they couldn't help me & I should contact Amazon. I then went back to Amazon & after around 2 hours of chat discussion, I finally found a helpful Amazon rep who cancelled my order & told me to buy the cards again.

I then bought the cards again, and received one of them successfully, before the second card order was again flagged and is now showing the same error message when I try to get the card code.

TLDR - Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can stop my Amazon gift card orders being flagged as a potential ATO scam victim ? Should I try using a different Amazon account ? Are some card types (e.g. Amex or a Visa debit) which are less likely to be flagged ?

  • I've never been flagged. But I only buy one at a time. I pay with my Amex.

  • What do scammers do with these cards anyway? Can they be converted to cash, or do they all have heavy google app purchase habits

    • I'm guessing they probably re-sell the codes on one of those "buy discounted gift cards" websites. The operations are too sophisticated for the scammers to do it only for their own personal purchases.

Can they be converted to cash, or do they all have heavy google app purchase habits.

Fairly sure. I figured they'd create apps with in-app purchases and the money gets laundered to themselves. Google would take like a 30% cut. There might be a better way.

Sell Google Play GCs to China is one way of laundering. Since google is banned in China the only way to purchase anything via Google is to go on VPN and redeem giftcard codes.
