Lots of Optus plans just slow down (to 1.5Mbps) when the full-speed data allowance is exhausted.

    So it is technically unlimited.

  • I don't know specifically what your friend is talking about.

Bit with Optus plans you generally get a data quota (say 30GB) where you can access data at full speed. Once you hit that quota you can still get data (so I guess that is uncapped) but the speed is slowed to 1.5 Mpbs.

  • Is he offering you a postpaid service with monthly discount, transferring you his service, or is this prepaid unlimited?

Either way, some details are missing. Like you can get a Small Optus Choice Plus Data Plan with Endless Data for $10/mth. What does your friendโ€™s offer gives you?

He just told me it is unlimited and no cap …he don't give me more info . He said each month charged me 20

  • As far as I know there are no unlimited mobile plans on any of the networks. They all have clauses that they can kick you off if you download too much and Optus does enforce this.

The unlimited plans should be called shaped plans where you get full or as best you can get up to the plan size you have purchased and then slow down to a crawl (some fixed max speed) until the next month of the plan kicks in. As such you cannot get unlimited data as it will be limited to the length of the month based on the speed limit plus your plan size as a max you can download.

I used to have an optus unlimited sim, bought it for about $300 on ebay, and it was I think something like $1/day if you use it and $0 if you don't. And once you use it you can use it unlimited for the whole rest of the day (so $30ish a month if used every day). They are a very old plan from many years ago when the only interesting things you could download were ringtones and wall papers. They stayed active as long as you didn't voluntarily change plans but optus would try super hard to make you give it up. Ours was a pain because the owner never gave us enough information to be able to change the owner online and it kept getting calls for Cindy from all different men. It was useful when we were living in the country where the adsl line we fought for months to get installed only got about 50kbps. We decided to turf it eventually after a few years - we lived somewhere with nbn available, plus data was much cheaper now and it wasn't worth the bother of being regularly called for Cindy. A few weeks ago I accidentally called that number instead of my partners new number and someone else answered (so the number has been recycled and then reallocated), before saying sorry wrong number and hanging up I wish I had thought to ask him if people still call that number looking for Cindy ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Best to ask your friend for more details.

  • I still have the grandfathered Optus $3/day unlimited 3g (which I got 4g activated on it) it used to be $2/day. i only use it when I'm away or I top-up every 6months to keep the Sim active. It's for mobile only. calls, sms, mms and data within aust is all unlimited. But works fine in a 4g router.
But to use it every day will be expensive like $90 a month.
