why are there so many tradies obsessed with this

    • +13

Because it has good performance, well thought out design, good UI and management tools, has a good ecosystem, and is fairly well priced?

      • +11

        Yeah but besides that?

        • +1

Do you know any other brand that does it better and in similar price range?

          • @bnh: I was joking.

          • @bnh: Tplink omada

Eap620 can be had for 175
Switches are much cheaper than edgeswitch

            • @butter: Thanks. Curious to see how they fare as my old consumer tplink router cant even handle 60 devices when we had an open house a few new year eve ago.

              • @bnh: The omada stuff is actually aimed at enterprises. I've been installing network gear my whole life (in fact it is my primary job) and can confidently say the enterprise grade tp-link stuff is as good, if not better than, the ubiquiti gear.

Ubiquiti devices sit in the prosumer range. Consumer device that sits near the professional grade equipment. We use Cisco APs at work and the unifi gear gives a similar experience and fraction of the price.

I run Unifi edgerouter and AP for the last 5 years, rock solid, no drop outs. Much better than anything on the market ive used IMHO. Adding extra APs to the ecosystem and mesh is super simple and has many advantages over the ISP delivered crap

      • Same experience here. EdgeRouter-X and UAPs. Rock solid for years. Never going near Netgear or other consumer crap ever again.

    • +1

What do you mean? How do you know tradies are obsessed with this?

    • TP-Link for home use also works a treat. For the same spec, if TP-Link AP can be found cheaper then I can recommend. Unlike Unifi these ones can be configured within its standalone web UI. Not everyone wants to run a controller for a simple home use case

For Wifi6 TP-Link APs comes with DC power adapter so this would be worth something if you don't already run a POE+ switch

      • +1

You can run the unifi equipment without a controller, the controller just gives you more features and diagnostics.

        • My apology for having the wrong impression on how Unifi operates. I have never used Unifi gear so far. So how do you set up a Unifi AP initially if not with a controller nor a web interface?

          • @CoronavirusVaccine: With the controller software. Just install it on a computer or phone, and do the setup. Then you can uninstall it and never touch it again.

Few years ago I couldn't see how it could get much better than a top of the line Asus with 35 antennas sticking out. Switched over to Unifi + Protect and never looked back.

  • Really wish these came with a POE injector so you didn't have to spend another $30 just to power it.

    • They used to, so usually can find 2nd hand injectors from people who've upgraded to PoE switches

    • Generally the lite models dont come with injectors, other models do

    • If yours can use 802.3af - Ubiquity 802.3af Supported POE Injector, White, 48V, 36W https://amzn.asia/d/8dAIUqe

  • still waiting for this deal to come back…
