  • Can you put any better bikes on sales? All the ones listed on that site are the very basic kmart/anaconda style bikes.

    • Big Nine 100 seems ok. I am in the market for a new hardtail soonish, but prefer slightly higher groupset than the 100 carries (I've come to the conclusion that Deore, as a minimum, is a good place to be…at least for the derailleur/s). We're not demanding riders (my family)…but I do all our bike work (including even rebuilding and/or truing wheels if necessary), and I find it harder to keep the lower end stuff running as smoothly.

I realise that I'm only looking into lower-mid-range gear here. The best group sets cost way more than any of these entires bikes! Once you get up into that mid-range equipment though, everything is just a little easier (if not all that light, but that's for racers).

The Big Nine 200 is a great bike to get into some proper trails. Unfortunately suppliers are showing 2023 as the next stock ETA. Hopefully that will be moved forward.

The Big Nine 100 as you said is an okay cheaper option, but it is running a 2x without a clutch. You are getting air suspension with lockout though which is nice. Though to be honest, Alivio is enough for most people unless MTB is the only riding you'll be doing. It handles some trails and path riding pretty well.

There are some other options but they are often more expensive, running worse components, or both:

        • I agree…the 100 is good bang for buck (and I didn't note that it had an air shock). It's certainly not a Kmart bike.

I was starting to think that supply issues are still a thing. 2023…wow.

          • @Banj0: Most of the entry-level stuff has normalized, but some high-end models are 2024-2025 😟

We often get surprised when stock arrives that we ordered 18+ months ago πŸ˜‚

      • I have a Big Nine with a 750w midrive motor. I ride it to work and smash it through bush tracks no dramas.

    • +3

Higher-end models are still lacking in supply and we aren't able to get any better deals through our suppliers. We're always open to working our best deals on models not specifically marked down if you let us know which models or spec/style you are interested in. Email us at [email protected] and we can quote you on any models πŸ˜ƒ

None of these models are Kmart-level bikes (unless Kmart has recently really stepped up their game πŸ˜…), but they are all entry level for their fields. I can't say I've carefully checked the latest from Anaconda but from my experience, generally their build quality, frame quality, and general design don't compete with proper bike brands even if they have some models with similar spec.

    This is a decent sale.

I tend to stick with Giant but the comparable ones here in the Merida are $100 - $200 less.

    Worth considering.

You don't need to get a high end one, these mid range ones are more than sufficient.

    • +2

Merida and Giant are each other's biggest competitors. They are both the largest bike factories in the world and produce similar models. Since Giant has been a leader for so long in Australia, Merida's pricing is really good to try and cut into the market. Some of their models are an absolute steal, especially when looking at some of their high-end road bikes like the Reacto 6000

  • My nephew is chasing a BMX. Shame you don't have any for sale.

    • +2

We always try work our best prices if you let us know which models you'd be interested in. I can't promise we can do any better on the price than advertised, but sometimes we can knock a bit off. Let us know what you're after and we can see if we can help [email protected]

  • Merida 21 Speeder 10 Mens 700C
Is this bike OK for weekend quick fitness nearby?
    or any other suggestion?

    Thank you~

    • That one is easily sufficient for weekend rides.

I have had this level bike before and could ride daily 36km round trips commuting to/from work.

    • It certainly is. The geometry and setup is very commuter oriented. If you wanted a more relaxed/comfortable ride, you could also look at the Crossway (though it's a bit more expensive).

As with anything, the more you spend, the better it is. The Speeder 20 would offer better brakes and gears so I often encourage people spend that bit extra, but if it's not within budget, the Speeder 10 will still be perfectly fine.

  • Can you please recommend a bike in this sale for 6'4 amateur with 1x drivetrain and tubeless compatible?

Almost bought a giant the other day but have been looking around so maybe I'll get merida instead

    • +2

Unfortunately Merida has sold out of their entry-level 1x hardtails and is running low on stock of their higher-end 1x hardtails so we weren't able to get any importer deals. We won't be able to mark the available models nearly as low as this sale, but we can still work a deal on some models (Merida and other brands).

Could you give us more details on where you were going to be riding? How much off road? What level of trails? Any on path/on road? Any jumps?

These days, many bikes are marked as tubeless ready that really aren't. Most bikes that are labelled "tubeless ready" might only have tubeless compatible rims. It's uncommon to get it taped and running a tubeless tyre unless you're looking at $4-5k options. In this price range, Norco sometimes even provides sealant. We will often setup tubeless on new bikes by swapping out the tyres and tape for the customer before it leaves the door. I'd suggest focusing on other aspects of the bike and we can set it up tubeless if required. If you look at models that advertise tubeless ready, carefully check exactly what they mean by that before assuming it's ready to go tubeless.

      • Not too sure on which trails as I've never owned a bike in wa but I'll guess intermediate level as I'm trying to lose weight

Fine with having the tubeless and tape added before or later as long as it's able to

1x seems the way to go or is that also easily upgradeable?

        Budget is $750-$1250

        • +2

1x is great for MTB riding. It simplifies your gear shifting and has less chain drop over rough terrain (especially when combined with a narrow-wide chainring and a clutched derailleur).
Where 1x fails is at any faster riding. Either really smooth-flowing "trails", paths, or roads. You often run out of gears as your range is a lot more limited.

Generally when looking for a 1x bikes, you're also looking for air suspension w/ lockout, a narrow-wide chainring, and a clutched derailleur. These generally start at around $1200+ for your best priced brands (like Merida's Big Nine 200) but most brands are sold out for quite a while.

If this is your first MTB and you aren't planning to go on too extreme of trails (no jumps, big drop-offs, or extreme rock gardens), you may be fine with something like the Big Nine 100 https://www.bikeforcejoondalup.com.au/21-big-nine-100-2x-29.… which is a 2x.

If you definitely want to go for a 1x, in terms of availability in your size, these would be the only options in your price point:
          https://www.bikeforcejoondalup.com.au/rogue-cruz-2022.html
This checks all the boxes but it is running smaller-brand components. Air suspension, 1x clutched, and a narrow-wide chainring.

          https://www.bikeforcejoondalup.com.au/rogue-ryde-29er-mtb-20…
This comes with a clutched derailleur but a normal front chainring and coil suspension (though it does have lockout).

          https://www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/cross-country/storm/202…
While this currently isn't in-stock in XL, the supplier's ETA is October for the red. This isn't loaded on our website at the moment.

          https://www.bikeforcejoondalup.com.au/21-storm-2-29er.html
This is due to be available in XL in October as well in the Blue/Black and Blue/Grey (not on our website)
Pricing may have gone up a little for the new shipment

  • Just bought a Merida Crossway 10-V Women's Hybrid for $366. Great price, thanks.
