TVs - Choosing between Samsung S95B QD OLED vs LG C2 OLED

Hi fam, after indulging myself with weeks worth of Youtube videos regarding TV tech. I'm thinking of biting the bullet with upgrading our TV.

As Samsung has released their QD-OLED and LG's tech is tried and tested, I'm having a hard time choosing between the two.

Quite a few questions really:
1. How good of a difference does Dolby Vision provide? Is it a deal breaker? I also have a PS5, follow-up question does the PS5 have proper DV support?
2. QD-OLED is first-gen tech, is it too early to adopt? But rtings and hdtvtest provided good reviews.
3. Pricing. Can get the S95B via EPP, then the LG C2 had that insane deal last month. Can probably use 28 degrees price protection to claim the discounts in the future. Which shop would offer the best aftersales support? JB-Hifi?
4. Support. How good is Samsung vs LG with this? In the event of burn-in or other issues, who would provide the better service?

The A95K looks like an amazing display, but I'm priced out of it.

Current display gear:
Hisense 55P7 - ozb TV from a few years ago, LED
LG Ultragear 27GL850 - main desktop monitor, IPS
Apple iPhone 13 Pro - my only oled device, a beautiful display

    1. Good. DV makes the movie look like it is being seen in a cinema. Without DV, the movie looks like it is being watched on TV.
    2. No, not too early. hdtvtest did say the Samsung has clouding but the TV fixed it after a few runs of the uniformity compensation.
    3. What's the question? The S95B has early adopter tax.
    4. Same.
    • Thanks Skid, edited #3. Should I be concerned with the warping issues shown with the Samsung from LTT's video? If you were to go between the two, which would you go for?

      • The warping issues are minor, I wouldn't be concerned. Although the Samsung is brighter, I find the LG bright enough in a dark room. I'd get the LG as it is tried and true. The Samsung has the early adopter tax. The Samsung is as likely to burn in as the LG so it has no advantages there. The Samsung has less black crush which is nice but black crush is not that big a deal on the LG. The Samsung has more clouding than the LG. I can't stand clouding.

  • I'm in the same boat. Was hard looking at the C2 and now the S95B comes to complicate things.

  • C2

  • This is an interesting video from Linus, it's not a Versus video, but it discusses the LG C2 being overclocked to make it brighter and there is a comparison to the Samsung QD Oled.

Wow. Interesting to find that the community prefers the established LG OLED vs the new technology from Samsung's QD-OLED. I was led to believe that QD-OLED is the next big leap.

    • In my head - if I'm spending a large amount of money on a TV, especially one that is hopefully going to last many many years - I'd prefer to get something tried and tested than a brand new technology :)

    • If you can wait a generation it should be more widespread.

But Samsung has annoying ads in their TV's.

  • The C2 is a better candidate for ps5

  • Both are great TVs i dont think you can go wrong with either. My only issue with the C2 is that it is very low and you might not be able to fit a normal height soundbar in front without blocking some screen real estate.

    1. Depends what you do with the TV, for films DV is better than HDR10 but like 5-10% better. Dolby Vision isn't that big a deal due to the limited brightness of most display tech, a brighter TV with high contrast displaying HDR10 will look better than a DV presentation that clips. For PS5 there is no DolbyVision gaming and DV gaming is a bit of a nothing burger.

    2. Its kind of crazy the WRGB oleds are priced the same as first generation QD-OLED. At RRP the LGs are completely overpriced.

If you game a lot in SDR the LG oleds are prone to aggressive automatic brightness limiter which can dull the hell out of the picture. The QD-OLED are much brighter in SDR. Also in HDR without color wash out. QD-OLED panels have also had perfect screen uniformity so far.

How much better a TV is over another depends on the person too, I don't like blooming but my sensitivity to it isn't high. Some people say they are blinded by the LG oleds, in my experience I'm certain this never happens unless that person is a former Plasma owner. No one can tell you how much you'll like a TV.

I'll never buy another TV based on reviews again because once you are using your content the experience can be really disappointing. I'm pretty biased against LG oleds due to the gimped SDR in game mode but when watching films they are top 3 TVs. I'd seriously look at the Samsung over the LG since they are the same price atm.

  • Okay, now doing further research, I've stumbled upon the Sony A80J. It's last year's model, but given it's features vs the current options, it's kind of in my radar now. Added to the poll, looking to hear feedback on it.

  • @monchee any updates?
    Black Friday around the corner…
    wallet cocked and loaded ๐Ÿค‘
C2 vs S95 vs older Sony model?
    p.s. I love this community

    • I made a post about a C2 deal, I got that yesterday lol
      Getting delivered later!

  • Samsung S95B looks stunning.

    • agreed… but more than the C2 is the question ๐Ÿค”

  • [this is for my fellow overthinkers ๐Ÿฅฐ]

So I finally went into a store to actually see all the new models… pretty shocked tbh.

1, because the HN staff actually educated me for once, lol (this never happens, quite the opposite) ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
2, because seeing the Samsung QD-OLED next to a Samsung Neo QLED, but not seeing much of a difference ๐Ÿคจ

Remember seeing an OLED TV and instantly knowing it's an OLED… yeah, that didn't seem the case anymore (at least for me). Shining my phone light on a QD-OLED panel and seeing it light up was the most shocking. I couldn't NOT see the washed out blacks after that (yes this was a brightly lit shop, so prob won't be as bad at home).

Samsung have now covered both bases, so def understandably smart. A year or two ago, most comments read "LED for bright room, OLED for dark rooms" so it seems they now have top products for both. The Neo QLEDs were rated the best TVs in that category (hopefully there's no more VA vs IPS drama) and the QD-OLED also seems to be at the top of everyone's list, esp due to the low price, which i saw one YouTuber mention, is due to the minimal marketing budget i.e. all the online reviewers did the marketing for them.

The Dobly Vision licensing still gets me though, but maybe this was also a factor in Samsung lowering their prices?

anyway, just wanted to log my thought somewhere ๐Ÿค“ I know everyone will say that are happy with their purchase (which the cynical side of me is saying they've justified it in their mind and cemented for life, regardless if it is true ๐Ÿ˜…). Most these TVs are stunning, I'm not doubting that at all. I've seen them side by side, and although slightly different, you wouldn't be upset if you had one. I guess I'm more interested in the personal experience of why people DIDN'T buy something.

As for me (if anyone cares, lol). I'm still undecided which is better: deeper blacks, but glossy/glarey VS washed out blacks, but minimal glare

or… maybe they cancel each other out in a dark room ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคฏ

    • Good luck! Keen to see what you end up getting.

      • it'll be now if ever (for these models)… ๐Ÿ˜” but starting to feel like I'll prob wait for JOLED
