Using a Zip Money One-Time Virtual Card in Store - Possible?

Just a hypothetical situation.

So Zip users would know that you can tap-and-pay with Zip Pay ($500), but this is not the case with Zip Money ($2000). You can still however generate a one time virtual credit card on Zip Money for online shopping.

What I am wondering is, would it be possible to use one of these virtual card numbers in store by manually entering the number into an EFTPOS machine?

Say for example if I had a hefty mechanics bill of $1000 and I wanted to put it on Zip. So I ask to manually enter a card number into the machine. I am willing to accept that I might come off as a bit suspicious manually dialing in a card number instead of paying the "normal way". But is this an option on eftpos machines, to manually enter a card number?

Does anyone know if this idea would work, if it came to it?

Having worked in retail before it's not uncommon that some customers need to manually punch in their card details. It should work so long as they accept VISA payment methods.

The credit card providers (at least the ones I've had in retail which include ANZ and Westpac) discourage manually entering the card details if the customer is present. In fact the policies they had said that if a fraudulent claim happened from this, then they would most likely side with the customer.

I don't know how they determined whether the "phone sale" customer was in store or on the phone, but they told us we couldn't do it.

I'm guessing you don't drive a luxurious prestigious European high yield investment car with all the bells and whistles. That would be a cheap service.

It's definitely possible, I used to do it all the time for a store that did a lot of business over the phone. Staff who are used to working in stores with only in-person transactions might not know how to do it though and try to tell you it can't be done. It would feel a bit dodgy too but I'd probably accept your explanation if you were a known/trusted customer.

They are called MOTO transactions (mail order/telephone order). When you punch a card number into a terminal - generally the merchant will get charged a fee - as they usually have a higher chance of chargebacks/fraud. Some businesses now disable this on their terminals.

You could try explaining the situation to the mechanics - so they understand why your asking them to do this way. You'll be able to find out then if they have it enabled on their terminal.

  • does afterpay do a tap and pay wireless card for all merchants. not just participating ones?

    • Afterpay card is for afterpay supported merchants only, but Zip pay works on any eftpos terminal or online store

WTF? Today I got an email from Zip offering an increase on my Zip Pay account from $500 to $1000. (yeah I accepted the offer..)

Either some crazy coincidence or maybe some kind of marketing collusion deal.. Wonder if the website admins are making a bit of coin off our data and habits..

Zippay offered increases from $1k to $2k to me almost monthly (I never took them), so I wouldn't look too much into it.

They probably offer it to anyone who hasn't missed a repayment.

    • Mines at 3k now and it’s stil zip pay (not money)
