What Decking Oil

Hey all, currently building a deck. Will be spotted gum. What Decking oil have people had success with? I don't want a glossy "stained" look, and don't want a garish tint, just something that provides good long lasting protection and a natural look.

Had a look at the big green shed, and the ones that looked ok were feast watson matt, and intergrain ultradeck natural. Reviews on both seem mixed, I assume this will be the case for most of these things.

  • Been using Intergrain, without much issues.

      Also found Instagram pretty handy

    • The ultradeck, or another variant? Does it last?

Ultradeck variant. Seems fine. I oil my deck once a year.

  • I used Spa-n-deck. It’s water based and seemed easier to apply. My deck is Merbau.

    Cutek CD50
Bunnings doesn’t have a quality product for this purpose. Best to buy from a specialist.

Looks the goods, do you use this?

      • +1

Yes i do, it is a good product, common for architects to specify it on commercial jobs.

        • Ripper, thanks, looks like it will be perfect, deck is going to end up being very low, so the more moisture and cupping protection, the better.

          • @brendanm: You might want to consider painting the underside of the boards before laying then down.

            • @JIMB0: Painting or using the oil? I was planning on giving them a couple of coats of the oil on the bottom before putting down.

              • @brendanm: The paint will last much longer than oil.

  • Haymes Dexpress. I have not used CD50 but have used the Intergrain products and this was much better to apply, much more consistent finish in fewer coats and has lasted several times longer in the QLD sun.

  • Can you use the CD50 on Merbau?

  • I prefer the oil based to water based. My deck looked much better after originally using an oil based Decking oil. Then I tried a Water based decking oil and it seems harder to keep clean looking.

    • Water based oil?

  • If you want to prevent the timber from fading/going grey, you will need to use tinted oil.
Clear oils do not provide UV protection.

Cutek is a good brand and you can get sample pots to see what it will look like
