  Dumb question - I have the game sitting on the shelf, can I just start the game, claim this, save and don't touch for a while? i.e. I don't need to play the game for a few hours before being able to add this right?

    I think you need to play till you get your starter at the Professor's house - at that point you'll unlock the ability to claim gifts via code. Shouldn't take that long.
