USB Laptop Charge in Car

Looking for a car USB charger to charge a laptop through USB-C, the power brick that comes with the laptop says "Max 65W", on the back of the laptop says "20V 3.25A" which is exactly 65W.

This one look ok (65W)? $32 after discount:

Or the more powerful one (100W)? About the same $32 after discount:

Higher power is good for future proofing, but not sure if it draws more power and causes more heat. Or the same if laptop doesn't require more power.

I'd be worried about draining the car battery.

Can't really comment on the chargers but amazon is pretty good for returns if it doesn't met your requirements. I'd personally get a small wall adapter (I'm using the nintendo switch charger for the work laptop) or PD capable power bank.

Yeah this would be the main worry with charging a laptop. There doesn't seem to be any real consensus about whether a higher wattage charger actually heats up more than a lower wattage one, but for sure you'd end up draining the battery much faster with a laptop than pretty much anything else you could plug into a car.

Thanks, a PD power bank is probably a better option, safer, and more portable. Also charging the power bank in car shouldn't require as much power.

      Good suggestion.

The PD power banks can be expensive. Make sure not to go over 27000mAh (aka 100Wh) as that's the limit that you can take a lithium ion battery on a plane without approval

      • The worst case scenario for heat generation is charging the battery while the CPU is running hot. If you are charging the battery while the notebook is powered off it should be fine.

Modern USB-C powered notebooks can charge at a lower rate if connected to a lower power USB-C charger. I've ran my notebook from a 30W phone charger. It charges slowly as you would expect

There are plenty of Baseus options that fit your bill. Baseus has a pretty good rep on OzB. Here's one, more if you look at the seller's other items (it's the official seller store): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313102981186?hash=item48e6645842… , https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313561954988?hash=item4901bfbaac…

    • Cool, thanks, will keep that in mind as well. Didn't check eBay at first, looks like some good options.

I have just spent a week or so looking at options for charging laptop in the car.
I also need to be able to charge phone, BT earpiece, work tablet, led headlamp, and other bits and pieces.

I ended up going with this Baseus charger:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313925592971?_trkparms=amclksrc%…

Arrived in 2 days, comes with C to C 100w cable, good quality, well packaged.
I also bought one of their 60w USB C to C PD braided cables. Good quality cable.

Laptop charged fine the other night when I tried it out at work using the supplied cable and the top 100w port.
My Oneplus phone reports rapid charging from either USB C ports, with both cables.

No issues so far, all seems to work fine, but I've only been using it for 4 days, and tried charging laptop once.

        Hope the info helps.

        • Thanks for that info and feedback, Baseus it is. :)
