eBay Cancelled My Plus Membership and Refused to Refund Me Unless I Upload My Passport or Driver's Licence

Hi.

A few months ago eBay sent me a message asking me to update my passport or driver's license to their site. I thought it was a seller-side thing, if I do not sell anything on eBay I shouldn't need to upload my personal information. But after the deadline they set, my eBay plus membership got cancelled without any notice. I then contacted their live chat support twice, and both times the customer services people said they will refund me without any problems.

20 days later I still didn't receive the refund so I contacted them today, now they are saying I have to upload my passport or driver's license in order to get the refund. This is ridiculous, when I bought the membership they didn't mention anything about my passport and driver's license, and now they just cancelled it and trying to force me for this information.

Usually, I'm not that privacy sensitive but it's just their way of handling things that made me so offended. I'm wondering what are the options besides writing a complaint to ACCC?

edit: thank you for the advice, raised a payment dispute with my bank, let's see how it goes

I would visit here in a few hours time for the best action to take.

Getting a circular reference error with stackflow 🤔.

      • Need to add more virtual memory until the recursive calls return an answer.

nothing much you can do, ebay terms and condition do say something like eBay reserves the right to cancel membership or something like that i think.

eBay is just getting dodgy af with time. Your case might be different, or not I dont know.

You could try chargeback but that's also only really possible within 3 months of transaction i think (with most banks)

If you just want eBay plus, then other thing you can do is simply create a new account, and start a eBay plus trial.

    • Thanks but I paid using a debit card I'm not sure if I can do a chargeback.
Nay just want to get my money back and cut any ties with eBay

there's not much difference in Visa/mastercard policies on chargeback policies

if you use a credit or debit card, at end of day if you used a Visa/Mastercard you should have right to dispute a transaction (given it was within the last 3 months or something like that).

if chargeback fails I'd personally reckon you'd be totally out of luck getting any money back from eBay.

Did they give you a reason of why the cancelled it? I have never had to upload any ID to eBay in the almost 20 years I've had an account.

I would also like to hear ebays side of the story.

    • No notices at all. Except their emails ask me to upload my information stating that:

We recently asked you to review and update some details on your eBay account. Looks like you haven't made any updates yet. Your payouts will be on hold until you fix this. Please do this by 2022-09-11 to get your account back in good standing.

    • ebay never gives a reason as to why they stopped issuing so many users the monthly $5 monthly vouchers too.
eBay doesn't really give a reason always. if they do its a very generic one like you breached terms and condition or something like that without specific an exact reason why it had been breached.

  • credit card chargeback?

I imagine that they reserve the right to cancel, are protecting themselves from fraud, and you are costing them more money than you pay by refusing to verify yourself. No profit for them = cancellation for you.

So they could just take my money and get away with it because I'm costing them more money by refusing to verify?

  • It's simple, you bought a service, there was no predication of the service on providing a passport or drivers license, when they cancel the service then you have a right to ask for a refund, if they refuse to refund you contact your card provider and tell them that they cancelled the service with no warning or reason and you want to do a chargeback.

    Problem solved.

  • Something very similar happened to me with my eBay plus membership. It was cancelled by eBay without asking me first due to the fact that I did not have my eBay account linked to a bank account.

Their reasoning seem to be that they needed my bank account details to pay out any seller funds or charge my account for seller costs.

They refuse to give me my money back from my eBay plus membership unless it was through a bank credit. They would not give me a eBay credit. They would not reinstate my eBay plus membership they just didn’t seem very helpful at all.

In the end, I gave up and gave them my bank account details. I intend to withdraw my consent for them to withdraw money from my bank account. Let’s see how that one goes.

    • yeah but I already had my bank details on their site, and now they are asking passport and driver's license 🙁 they are getting greedier with time

  • I'm on the other side of the fence where ebay would randomly charge me for my cancelled ebay plus membership every few months or so. Very annoying to have to contact CS to reverse everytime it happens.

eBay has the worst customer service, I don't even know how they even approve such processes. Thing is, the bigger the company, the worse the customer service is and their cookie cutter processes and ways to avoid resolutions.

ACCC won't do anything, if the ombudsmans could handle eBay, that's your best bet but they don't unfortunately. Did you pay by paypal? Then go to paypal raise the payment then if paypal rejects it, go to the ombudsman about paypal rejecting the claim.

I signed up for eBay plus under their free month promo and a few days later I cancelled it cause I knew I wasn't going to renew it but also the remaining weeks will still be active. I got an email notification my eBay plus subscription will be cancelled in approx 3 weeks time when the full month is up. All good right? Nope, I wanted an item from Peters of Kensington which offers free express shipping if I am on eBay plus so I wanted to take advantage, to my surprise, my ebay plus membership cancelled on the day I cancelled it, email state other wise.

Spoke to chat, gave the evidence of my email, also quoted their eBay T&Cs that if a membership is cancelled, they still get the remaining month. They couldn't re-activate it, even a manager got back to me and said the screenshot and T&Cs don't apply….. WTF? Also another ebay member said there is another clause in the T&Cs that eBay can void, ignore or whatever other clauses in the T&Cs ….. what's the point of having T&Cs when there's a clause eBay can change their mind and not honour the T&Cs? Such things should be illegal with reason.

I created another ebay account and signed up for ebay plus then cancelled….. i checked the end date on my actual account and it ends when the month is up! So I don't know why my other account cancelled on the day, bug or something.
