18 Kilograms is quite heavy IMO.

    • Ain't nothin but a peanut

    • +3

You need to lift more often bro

    • +3

18kg is the whole thing including packaging. Someone answered the question on weight of bike being 8kg (See amazon Q&A). Thanks OP. Ordered one. We'll see how it is with use.

      • +5

8kg is wayyyy too light for a generic cheap bike of this calibre. Even my mid-range road bike is a touch over 9kg.

Btw all, lots of these on eBay and you'll be able to use the 15% off Afterpay code until tonight.

        • +2

That’s the R1, not sure what the difference is but that bike is down to $259 with $40 off on Amazon if you’d prefer that over eBay

      • +3

Yeah I call that BS. 8kg seriously? You probably need a top of the range $8k carbon fibre frame with these entry level components to get 8kg for a complete bike.

      • +4

There is no way this bike weighs 8kg. I have an $8000 full carbon Bianchi road bike and it weights just on 8kg with wheels and groupset.

        • -6

Oh big man, had to mention the price, couldn't have just said you have a carbon bike

          • +2

@abc12345: If you knew anything about bike manufacturing, you'd know that there are very different carbon grades and layups, and stating the value is to illustrate that it's a high-end, very light, bike - not a base model that could be a kilo heavier. And if a high-end bike is 8kg then a piece of crap like the one in this post is not going to be within 6kg of it.

      • +1

I somehow doubt that the packaging alone is 10kg.

      • +1

cheap mtb - 18kg sounds right on the money 😃. I have nothing against cheap bikes - if you maintain them and don't mind the weight they are fine. I have an ancient fluid bike that I bought from anaconda - it got me started with bike skills; it's now my urban bike.

    • +1

All you need to do is loose 8kgs of fat.

  • -7

Better off spending the money on a bottom end Giant brand bike, or at least something from Anaconda. No thanks!

    • +3

Is this based on your experience with this particular bike?

      • -1

Based on experience with these kinds of bikes at this spec level, yes.

  • +1

I’ve been looking into entry level mountain bikes this week. This is an alloy frame with shimano gears which seems decent for $299. Some of the reviews report good customer support and positive initial experiences. Anaconda is twist gears, reid aren’t too bad but shipping is $75

  • Dang, lotta bike for not many dollarbucks

  • +1

It's not bad, but it's not great either. It's definitely not a "Mountain bike" - there will be warning labels all over this, and taking it on anything rougher than a rail trail would be pretty sketchy.

    • what’s a decent bike for around this price? Or no such thing?

      • +4

It depends on the use. For riding around shared paths/rail trails/etc for fitness, this is totally fine. For actual mountain biking at any level (e.g. doing jumps or riding somewhere like Lysterfield or the You Yangs in Melbourne) you're looking at around $1,200 for a cross country/hardtail bike with hydraulic brakes and a 1x drive train (a single chain ring up front). The fork on a bike like that would be a minimum 120mm of travel.

This type of bike is more what is known as a 'hybrid', and as mentioned below, the suspension forks on these are next to pointless and are mostly just a weight penalty.

  • +5

This is not a bargain. This is a cheap thing sold at full price. It is not a significant discount on RRP.

    Cheap =/= Bargain.

You are far better off buying a quality item second hand for the same price. You will ride this three times, hate it, and throw it in the shed.

    • What would be the issue with this bike? To heavy , hard to pedal?

      • +3

Just generally cheap components, bit like bikes you find in BigW or Kmart.
If you are looking to buy a bike for riding around paths, get one without suspension as these lower end ones are just aweful.

At the risk of getting negged like the eraser215, here’s my brief take as someone who’s had many bikes over the past 30 years or so, rising even longer.

        • The specs only have details for the derailleurs, shifters, cassette, chain, and, tyres, which means that everything else like the brakes and forks are just generic no name parts.
        • Shimano Tourney TZ is the bottom of the barrel stuff usually reserved for department store bikes
        • lots of steel parts will mean it’ll be very heavy

It’ll be fine for a pub bike or occasional rides with the kids, but don’t expect to have it a long time and lots of parts will break, rust, or be a pain to adjust. This is really no different to the bikes Kmart sell for $150 - $200 imo.

        • +2

Thank you for putting in the effort to articulate what I was too lazy to put in writing! The classic story for these kinds of bikes as per @sheikyerbouti is that the rider will hate it and just leave it in the shed. Great value for something you will never use.

        • any recommendation for a bike to look for instead, please?
case: ride to school with kids, light trails or bike tracks.

any pointers what brand or components to look for / hunt for on marketplace appreciated!

          • +1

@yoba: If your budget is only $300 then you could likely get an entry level mountain bike from a more reputable brand like the Giant Talon. Perhaps just have a look on some sites with bikes in the similar price range and write a list. You should be able to find similar from other companies like Merida, Scott, Norco, Trek.

I've noticed that on marketplace, sellers really skimp out on the details so ask how old it is, if it's been serviced, look for any major wear on the cassette, check the brakes work well, shifting is smooth, even if the chain is lubed. You may genuinely get lucky and find something in mint condition from someone who thought they'd be trying to get fit and gave up.

  • Is it a bargain?

    • -2

Maybe not a bargain but possibly a good deal if you actually need an entry level bike right now and you were going to buy one anyway? 🤷🏽‍♂️

    26": Bicycle net weight 15.5kg, plus packaging 18.8kg (https://www.easytrybike.com.au/products/r2-26-inch-mountain-…)
    27.5": Bicycle net weight 15.89kg, plus packaging 19.12kg (https://www.easytrybike.com.au/products/rexi2-27-5-inch-moun…)

    • That bike cannot be 7kg or 8kg as my full carbon road bike is just 7kg.

  • +3

I got the 29in EasyTry bike. It's great. 100kg and 6ft 4in tall. I had to get a stem height extension which raised the height just nicely for me. It light enough and solidly built. I can recommend.
Their delivery came in a under a week from Melbourne to Sydney.

typical cheap supermarket quality bike …not a bargain

  • +3

I've bought cheaper bikes from Kmart, BigW and looked at some at Anaconda before. For the price of these and quality/value of the bike with the parts used on the bike, I'm happy with this bike. I'm not a cycling fanatic but just an average person starting a healthy cycling hobby with the kids. It's great!! It's also lighter than my kids Repco steel bike thats 26in. Gears change with no hesitation and disc brakes are great.
