Why Is Diesel So Damn Expensive?

Hi all,

Remember those days when the price of diesel was below 98 fuel?
Even the chopper doesn't work as well as before.

It’s not too bad atm, I had to fill up at $2.30 the other day

Where's this? Its dropped below $2 again here

Brisbane last week my fault for not fuel locking

    • +2

That's no good, it's been in the 180s in the chopper for a while.

        Spewing

Really need to get around to setting chopper fuel lock up

        • +2

          Very much worth it.

    Toyota Echo? Toyota Yaris?

  • +2

People got suckered in diesel and now it isn’t paying off.

    • keen to see what Toyota officially does with electric hilux (if it ever happens)

      • +1

Possibly make an oversized, barely but just reliable land barge that relies on the reputation of their early hilux models?

    it's a really complicated situation.

you see with the conflict in Ukraine by Russia (who produces a lot of the world oil), and then the cost to bring oil to australia (due to tides, transportation demand, etc), then there is the increase in the global crude price. and most importantly - oil companies have us over a literal barrel and want to maximize profits.

Diesel is cheaper to produce than petrol. Diesel is taxed the same. Diesel is more expensive at the bowser. This is petrol companies ripping us off.

Glad I sold my diesel last year (weirdly easily and well)

  • IIRC it’s not really that long ago that diesel was consistently more expensive than petrol. Then in the last few years it dropped below petrol and since Ukraine, has jumped back above petrol.

Now I don’t know what’s going on, other than oil companies screwing us and blaming some sort of global situation.

    • Not sure why that got a neg. I thought diesel was usually more expensive than petrol, but you can get more km out of it

Diesel is suppose to give you up to 2x the fuel economy compared to petrol. Right now I think diesel costs about 25% more than petrol so it is still cheaper to use.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a car with a diesel engine unless I need it for heavy towing.

    • +2

It’s not 2x the economy. It is more efficient, but not by that much.

      • I said "supposed to give you up to 2x" and that was the claim when diesel engines initially rolled out. We all know it's just advertising and you won't get the economy remotely close to it.

        • +1

Right. So it was 2x over 50y ago when diesels were slow noisy smoky beasts and carburettors were hard to tune and wouldn’t run well when cold.

Diesel is more efficient, but anything built this century (which includes vintage cars now) won’t be anywhere near 2x difference and really depends on driving conditions.

          • @Euphemistic: It wasn't that long ago that VW/BMW were rolling out different models with diesel engine with a price premium of $3k over petrol. There are reasons why diesel engines are dying if not already dead. I get it. I am just saying it was "supposed" to be fuel efficient and saves lots of money.

            • @DarkOz: The price premium is mostly because Diesel engines are more expensive to build. They are also heavier and require more stringent servicing.

Your assertion of 2x as fuel efficient was the concern.

They are phasing or diesel because of pollution controls/standards making the Diesel engine not suited to short distance driving or being in cities in passenger cars.

    • Mine gives 8-9L/100km pure city driving

  • Supply and demand. It's out of whack the world over, with diesel being more expensive than petrol.

You can monitor the local wholesale prices here: https://www.aip.com.au/pricing/terminal-gate-prices

An argument I often hear is 'diesel is less refined than petrol, so should be cheaper'. Not necessarily. Depends on the supply and demand for each, where oil is sourced from, which refineries are currently producing which product, etc. Technically, diesel is cleaner than 91 petrol when it comes to maximum sulphur content too.

One thing is for sure: oil companies and refineries are making super profits based on the much higher prices.

Saudi Aramco makes 700 million dollars in profit every single day. That's probably a big part of why.

To wipe the smug look off the face of diesel drivers who like to tell you about how much cheaper their car is to run and how the engine will last much longer than your petrol car.
