        • Strava + Quadlock will get you by, they're both rock solid.

I prefer Komoot over Strava , it'll give you more stats and incline, distances, etc …
The free tier Komoot still gives you more than enough functionality, and you can always have it sync activities with Strava

  • Any good bike camera recommendations?
    E.g. Cycliq, GoPro?

    • I just use GoPro, but not always.

Use this from Bunnings, to glue the GoPro mount to helmet.

great bike. bought one for $700+ and rode it for 3 month. only reason for me to sell is the front derailer requires 3 trips to the bike shop to adjust. went with a 1x and never looked back

    • Yea, if budget allows, go for 1X, much simpler. Lost the front derailleur, 1 shifter and cable.

Not having to deal with a front derailleur, the rear derailleur is much easier to self service, just tension and high/low screws. Also, there is no cross chain problems to solve.

But bikes with 1X drive train is usually quite a bit dearer, because the rear derailleur and cassette are costly, which usually go with other expensive components.

  • Fantastic Bike and price. Great find OP

Anyone knows what should be the correct size for a 175cm male if getting the merida speeder bike? Should it be MD or MD/LG?

  • live in regional but the roads here aren't like the metro, would this bike be fine ?

    • +1

if its on the road, it's fine, but if you are mostly on gravel and loose dirt, you'd probably be better served with a bike that has different tyres - typically called gravel bikes.

      • +1

Tyres are very easy to change

        • +1

Yes, they are but the wheels may or may not fit the extra width and if they don't, they're pricey additional expense.

          • +1

@lawyerz: 35mm pirelli cinturato or maxxis rambler can definitely fit in this bike… Mind you many cyclocross bikes used to run on 32-33mm as well…

I'd buy a Giant Roam 3 of similar spec but with additional front suspension (for light off-road), or get a Reid Urban X equivalent.

  • Any idea if this is compatible with a child seat?

    • I don't see the eyelets for the rear rack mount from the pictures, so I'd say no. You could give them a call or pop into a store to confirm.

    • It looks like there is enough space under the handlebars to fit a front mounted child seat such as a bobike

    • Depends on the seat. No top eyelits mean you can't use one like the Topeak that attaches there. But you could use one like this Thule that attaches to the inner frame. I personally don't really trust those as I'd prefer more rigidity of a rack under the seat, but they're probably fine…

    • Yes the hamax kiss or any other seat tube mounted seat works with these. As bobkin says front mounted is an option also. Just beware XS and SM frames may need different mounting bars so best to check in store

      • Awesome. Thanks for the replies. I will check in store

    • A different price point, and you won't get as good a groupset - but I ride a Specialized Sirrus when I have my 4 year old onboard with a topeak Child Carrier - it is a really great combination.

      https://www.specialized.com/au/en_AU/shop/bikes/active-bikes…

      https://www.topeak.com/global/en/products/67-Child-Carrier

EDIT - HOLUP! Looks like they don't have the rear rack mounts on the Sirrus anymore?!?!?!

  • it looks like a good deal based on how many ppl likes.
Is there any one can shine me some light why it is a good deal?
I was more after a dual suspension.
    Thanks in advance.

Alloy frame (not steel), carbon fork (not alloy), tapered headset (not straight), Acera groupset (not non-series), hydraulic brake (not mechanical), cartridge bottom bracket (not external bearings), internal cable routing (not external).

All those are attributes found on quality bikes in the $1,000+ range. Although still considered "entry level" but high quality entry level. That's why this is a good deal.

      • Cartridge over external bearings is considered a positive? Tell me more..

        • +1

Good call out, that's moot point in this situation. I was thinking about the cost/upgradability to a compact down the track, the crankset is much more costly for external bearings. But no manufacturers would include external BB at this level. :D

  • so really the price is $628 + free delivery

  • is Disc Brake on this model better than the V-Brake with older models?

  • Anyone know if I'll be able to install some pannier racks at the back of the bike for bikepacking and commuting?

  • Any mud guard recommendations?

  • IMO would be better off hunting on facebook for a bike with proper shimano gears at this pricepoint

Got a Merida Scultura 100 for $550 bucks but ymmv depending on how hard you hunt

    • What're your thoughts on the Scultura vs Speeder models?
I'm noticing Scultura have drop-bars instead of flat bars - what might be the other pros and cons, can I ask?

      E.g. Speeder 100 vs Scultura 100, or
Speeder 200 vs Scultura 200, if this makes them easier to compare?

      • I wonder how the Pedal Pursuit 2 is compared to the Merida Scultura Rim 100. $539.10 vs $1079.10, must be something to it…

        • the pedal pursuit is mostly made up of unbranded components.

          ie
          Cassette 14T-28T 7SPD 28T BLACK,OTHERS BROWN, STEEL
          Brakes CALIPER BRAKE,DUAL PIVOT

the Merida is 2x8 and features carbon fork (vs steel)

One would have to decide whether a "brand" is worth extra money, but you tend to find you get what you pay for with bike components to a certain level and I personally would think the components are pretty bad quality if even a less than reputable company isn't willing to put their brand on the items.

On the other hand it could mean that they will use whatever components fit the bill of what they've advertised.

      • The Speeder 100 has more lower end components in the Shimano range, relative to the Scultura.

The scultura uses pivot brakes vs the disc brakes in the speeder. Between the two if well maintained they shouldn't have big differences however for someone that doesn't do a lot of maintenance the disc brakes tend to fare better

The scultura is 2x8 gears while the speeder is 3x8. The speeder has gears that will help if you're on the heavier side going up hill or carrying lots of weight whereas the scultura is geared towards faster overall movement. Between the two if you do bike paths they should fare similarly but the speeder is likely to be an easier ride for beginners.

      • Scultura is a better bike overall with proper Shimano range components

On the Speeder 100 you're getting a 3x setup with an Acera groupset which isn't considered part of their "real" line of components. You get a proper Claris groupset on the Scultura which is a noticeable step up.

You might think that having 3 chainrings on the front is good, but all it really does is add weight and have overlapping gears.

Another misconception is that flat bars = good for beginners. Drop bars allow you to put your hands in various positions, which is more ergonomic than having them stuck in the flat position all the time. Will take maybe half a day to get used to but after that it's no problem.

  • Can I use someones gold membership? Promise to pay you back :)

  • Great price on the speeder 20 too - https://www.99bikes.com.au/merida21-speeder-20-anthracite-bl…. $473/ $426 Club / Gold. Bought one for my daughter in January - best price I could price match and negotiate at the time was $617.

  • Before I place my order, can I get some opinion on this bike vs

My usage will be on the road to get to the office and back home.

    • +1

The Trek uses bottom of the barrel (3x7, 21speed) Shimano vs the Merida 100 at around 4th from bottom (3x8, 24speed). Brakes are fairly comparable although the Merida 100 uses Shimano which does have a bit of brand premium. It also has phat nobby tyres so will eat more energy on roads, but bite better on dirt/mountain trails

The Merida Speeder 20 is comparable to the Trek, also uses bottom of the barrel Shimano. Substantially lighter than the Trek though, ~11kg vs 14kg. Tyres are better for gravel/roads than the Trek.

Merida 100 features carbon fork which neither of the others have

      • Thank you very much for your explanation @peter05. Sounds like Merida Speeder 100 is the one.

  • Doesn’t appear to be any stock (in melbourne)

  • Link has now disappeared

  • Did they get rid of the 99bikes gold membership?

edit: according to a more recent post comment, they got rid of the gold membership. if anyone still has a membership, that would be much appreciated!
