Best 65inch TV under $2.5k

Upgrading from a crappy Kogan 49inch Mu9000 something or other, so any upgrade will be massive.

Have about $2k to drop but can extend to $2.5k.

I honestly can't make up from down with this stuff. The QN85b seems to be a good bet but everyone dunks on Samsung, so I looked at the X90K but then everyone seems to say "bro just get an OLED", but a comparable OLED is $1000 or so more.

What's the go? What's worth the money?

I've seen these as the main contenders: Sammie QN85b, Sony X90k, TCL C835.

Use case is gaming (more casual stuff, GoW, Elden Ring, etc.) and streaming. I have a stereo to run it through so not worried about sound. GOOD smart features and voice control is a big plus.

Room is reasonably bright, but no direct sun.

Pls help.

Based on historical pricing you could get the LG C1 65" OLED for $2500-$2800 on sale - which is my pick for gaming and overall image quality

The X90K 65" should be doable for under 2k later in the year - it's a reasonably new release but the previous X90J range would dip as low as ~$1800

Cheap TCLs with 3 year guarantees have served me well for a number of years.
My prime use is as a monitor… I luvvvv 75" monitors while relaxing somewhere comfortable saving the world while the missus is doing her thing on her big arsed TCL.
The choice is whether you want to pay lots for an imax style picture, or want to have lots of money left for other things while having a wonderful big arsed monitor.
My 65" TCL has recently suffered rapidly shrinking screen illumination after 7 years of lotzzzzzz of work. (I permanently moved to TCL after being disgusted with my samsung experience shortly after their 1 year warranty expired. I'll never buy a tv with a 1 year warranty again)
I've just upgraded to a 75" 75P735 TCL "monitor" for $1330 delivered. I expect a similar great and extended experience with this one, and I've got lots of bucks left to spend on other things. (and the relatively low power consumption is an ongoing saving)
If you're concentrating on gaming I don't reckon you'll notice the last 10% quality difference between some GODLEDOLED feature that will be yesterday's news in a while, compared to a quality cheap tv picture.

how far do you sit to use that 75" as monitor ?
if far, can you still read text on excel, word, outlook etc ?

  • Use case is gaming

    OLED is best for gaming.

well… at the moment I'm using a 5 year old 60" TCL until I go to town and pick up the 75". I'm lazily reclining with my eyes about 2.1M from the screen as I type. It is quite comfortable and easy to read on a browser, on spreadsheets, and on email. And wonderful to watch the footy and such streaming through the pc, when zooms on players show about real head size on the screen, in high quality…
Another setup in a guest bedroom has a 75" (ahem…TCL) screen a bit under 3.5 metres from the eyes… that distance is more difficult to see text, and a bit of a strain. With better vision it would be sort of workable, but it's a pain in the arse for me. Wonderful for movies or streaming, but a bit too far for a monitor.
For info… I have a 32" curved gaming monitor, but I muchhhh prefer the big arsed tv as a monitor.

PS… running an old logitech Z5500 speaker setup running off the pc digital out adds magnificent booming (when required) sound which, when playing steam train whistle/ chuffing sounds will scare sheep over 100 metres away. Imagine entertaining your neighbours with that!
These things are ancient, but still frequently available via gumtree etc with $150 a bargain price for nominal 500watts! Good earthy sound with electronic remote mixing control
and a bass speaker box like an anvil. The only drawback with these is connectability - no HDMI, but if your pc has digital audio out you can be in audio bliss for velly velly cheap! picture - https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/turramurra/other-audio/logit…

  • Thanks… but they don't even deliver to adelaide, let alone where I am…
The other one is all paid and delivered to a friend in adelaide waiting for me to pick up. Cheers

  • Got myself a C835 a week or so ago.

It looks great. Has a really nice image and you won't be disappointed gaming at 4K/60 BUT…

At 120fps or when enabling VRR you lose the ability to activate local dimming. So that's the trade off vs OLED. Outside of that it looks almost as good as OLED.

Sound from the internal speakers is really good. Good enough that you could do without a soundbar or additional bookshelf speakers.

I got a 55" which was about $700 less than the cheapest OLED competitor. So good if you want a great TV on a budget.

  • OLED is worth the money.
