Full licence holders (car, motorcycle, and heavy vehicle) who haven't incurred demerit points or committed other road safety offences for three years prior to their licence renewal will receive a 25 per cent discount on their next renewal as part of the Safe Driver Discount program.

The program will be introduced for driver licence renewals generated after 1 October.

The Safe Driver Program aims to reward good driving behaviour to those who demonstrate safe driving behaviours behind the wheel. The Victorian Government is committed to improving road safety for all Victorians.

From the FAQ:
What if I incur demerit points or commit a road safety offence after my licence renewal (including the 25% discount) is issued?

    Buttering us up for privatisation?

"Proudly sponsored by <insert corp logo here>" on the back probably

      • +1

        pfizer

    • Bringing back a deal that the Libs got rid of a couple of months before Dan came to office. Shame it's taken him so long to bring it back.

  • +6

    Great. Mine expires in September.

    • +2

      Friday for me :/

    • They announced the discount in July but didn’t have a timeline on it. Mine expired last week, what can ya do 😔

    • +1

      2029 for me :(

    • Mine too. What would be the consequences if we postpone renewing for a month?
Edit: found the answer. We have six months to renew expired licence.

  • +3

Welp the only one thing inflation didn't hit.

    Locked in ten years

  • +9

I don't understand why it costs more per year if you renew 10 years compared to 3..

    • +14

      Geared for inflation

      • +2

But they already have the cash in their bank earning interest inline with the inflation.
So really it's just a scam.

    • It will go up faster than inflation. 10 years ago NSW licence was a lot higher than vic licence but now the Southern state is catching up.

    • +1

Because they're afraid future lockdowns will affect Safety camera revenue again. So they need to prepare for it.

  • +1

    ACT have the discount too

ACT residents are eligible to receive a 30% discount on their ACT driver licence renewals if they have not recorded any of the below offences in the previous 5 years.
Licence holders are not eligible for the discount if within the last five years they have:
    committed a traffic or camera detected traffic offence where an infringement notice was served;
been convicted of a major offence such as drink or drug driving; or,
been convicted of a motor vehicle related traffic offence.

I just received my renewal notice: 3 years for $76.10, 8 years for $215.30, but still higher than VIC 😩

    • +3

NSW is 50% off, $181 for 10 years!

  • Mine expiring in 5 months, and got a speeding ticket during a test drive last month, DAYUM!

    • +1

      Give it to your wife

    • +2

If first speeding offence try and appeal it. My dad did that (due to his normally clean driving record) and it was reversed, my husband did the same in the USA and they reversed it.

      • +1

has to be under 10km/h and not incured any other infringements in last 2-3 years. Otherwise unless ur a drug addict or victim of domestic violence or driving ur pregnant wife to hospital - ur screwed.

        • +3

unless ur a drug addict or victim of domestic violence or driving ur pregnant wife to hospital

What a category of people to clump together 🤣

  • +1

I just renewed my licence the week before Dan announced this 'deal', talk about bad timing.

    • +1

Last Monday for me, too. :(

  • +19

Now let's see this applied to rego… 😏

    • It's all going to be jacked up. Victoria has a lot of debt to work through

      • +1

You say that like debt needs to be paid off 😂

  • Does the discount expire?

    • I have the same question.

I presume it's indefinite, until any change is announced in the future.

  • Does it need to be due or can you simply add time?

  • +3

NSW offers a 50% discount albeit if you're a good driver over 5 years before the renewal

If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for an automatic 50% discount on your licence renewal fee under the NSW Government’s Fair Go for Safe Drivers Scheme.

    You’ll need to:

have held your full NSW driver, rider or heavy vehicle licence for at least 5 yearsnot had any relevant offences recorded in the past 5 years, including:driving and parking offences that attract demerit pointsa conviction for a major offence (such as drink driving)unlicensed driving offencesbe eligible for the discount on the day you renew your licence (not the date your renewal is due).

The discount will be automatically applied when you renew your unrestricted licence for 1, 3, 5 or 10 years.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can renew your licence up to 6 months after its expiry date and receive the discount.

I did mine for 10 years a couple of years back for 180ish dollars.

  • +9

Wonderful news, I only need to wait for 8 years.

  • There has to be less road use with the amount of people working from home part time and full time.

    • The smart ones sold there car and no longer need a license. Thats the real savings.

      • +2

You still need a licence even if you don't have a car. You would save on rego though which is the real cost.

    • +1

You'd think so but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  • +1

Anyone know how far in advance you can renew? Found it documented for NSW (6 months IIRC), but couldn't find a reference for VIC

  • -1

Worth converting license to VIC one to claim discount ?
    and then change back ?

sounds like it would be cheaper than to renew SA license directly which is $50/year + flat $20 fee

  • +5

Shame they couldn't do something like this for car registration during the 1.5 years of lockdown.

  • far out! saving of $73.59 but mine will expired in September :(

  • +1

This is good. Now double it for those with demerit points.

  • +1

How about 25% off TAC premium if you haven't caused a personal injury in the last 3 years

  • That would be right. Got my first speeding fine in 5 years a month ago. Noticed I had gone over while overtaking a tractor (Doing 96 on a highway that's only 80), started to slow down and spotted police sitting at the side of the road with a radar gun :(

    • +1

Yeah, typical story, I feel for ya.

I've gotten two speeding fines for the lowest category (<10km/hr) in my 18 years and both were for overtaking, once from a merging lane to get in front of a congested lane and another for a slow heavy vehicle on a regional back road. I don't contest that the infringement is valid - speeding is speeding - and I duly paid immediately. But I believe there are infrequent circumstances were you may need to briefly breach a speed limit (and immediately return to it) when it's of benefit to safely manage traffic flow. I now find myself avoiding merging lanes (where possible) and second-guessing a safe overtake of a heavy vehicle on a single lane - I'm not sure it's great for traffic flow and cars backed up behind me, but punitive measures do alter behaviour.

    • +1

I wouldn't cry about it. the $7 would might of saved for a the pissant discount is nothing compared to the fine which is probably close to $400.

      • Yep, currently paying it off $25 a fortnight.

  • Old Dan Privatising this is a disgrace

  • -1

WOW a whole $7 a year saving! if u never get a single 3km/h over the speed limit fine - what an incentive. Fail!

    • -1

The incentive for not getting fined is avoiding paying the fine itself as well as the demerit points…

      • case in point…. hence the discount is 100% negligible. But i guess its better than a kick in the balls.

  • +3

anyone would think it's an election year

  • -4

Danny boy slowly integrating CCP social credit system eiy?? Be a good boy an get rewarded or be a bad boy and get punished… Naughty Danny 🤔😁

    • +2

You could have complained about it being party privatised but instead you chose this angle 🤦‍♀️

      • -2

        Whatever you say

  • If you are over 26 do you need to carry your driver's licence on you in Victoria whilst driving?

    • The card says so but I never heard about anyone got fined for that, unlike NSW.

It makes sense why NSW folks are so keen on mobile license card.

    • No, but you must be able to provide proof of identity. Also, if requested, you have 7 days to have your license sighted at a police station.

  • +5

I don't even understand why we have to pay for driving license renewal. Almost $300 for just printing out a plastic card? This is nothing but a money grabbing scheme.

    • Subsidising the people who sit at vicroads all day doing jack all.
You're surprised a government job is comfy?

    • Agreed

  • -2

Would I be eligible? I got a $10,000 fine for driving outside COIVD zone last year which was repealed after I contested.

    • No, Dan will have a record of this.

    • -1

      Sorry to hear that mate
      This is utter bs

  • +1

25% off registration would be grateful also.

  • Damn, went for the 10y license in September 2019. Would have been perfect timing

  • how many years before my demerit point gets refunded back to me?

    • 3 years from the date of the offence.

      • could I nominate another driver for an incident that happened 2 month ago before I realised it made a difference with this deal?

  • +1

With 600kw+… No discounts for me!!! :(

  • Fark me.

Victorian's are so progressive. Maybe I need to move.

    • NSW is 50% off, i guess you are moving again.

  • LOL, NSW is 50% off. I wanted 10 years, but I could only get a maximum of 5 years since i have an MR and motorcycle license.

  • Mine expiring in 2027, does this stacks ?

  • Reminder set for 2023. :P

  • Gonna have to do better than that Danny boy to have a chance at election.

    • what's the alternative? that guy guy?

      • -1

Who cares. Fill it with independents.

Vic Labor party needs a hard reset. I'll never vote for them while any of the covid autocrats remain.

  • i just renewed last month. Jibbed!

  • I just received my renewal for 10yrs due end Oct but for $292.80 not the discounted $219.60. Had no demerit points in the last 3yrs and it's saying so on vicroads account too…! How do I qualify for the discount?

    • It starts on the 1st of October so the system might apply the discount then?

      • So does that mean I wouldn't qualify as they generated my invoice before 1 Oct despite my renewal only due end Oct? Clear as mud promotion here…

        • I was in the same boat as you, and I just called up and they said if you've received the letter already, then you are not eligible. They said they start sending out letters 6 weeks in advance so only people with licence expiries from mid-november would truly be the first batch getting the discount. They said they can't do anything about it even if you have a licence expiring October, such a bummer.

          • @yessum: That's what most gov department has a stock answer. They can't do anything about it…

            • @spedohero: Remember it’s not government anymore, it’s now privatised

          • +1

@yessum: What a load of crock, I'll visit their customer service centre and complain.

          • +1

@yessum: Hope for a part refund if they would do something like that

  • +2

My license is due for renewal after 1st Oct and I am renewing today, I have no demerit points. However, I still don't get the discount because it's dependant on when they sent you the email reminder to renew and not when your license is due for renewal or renewed, which is retarded. Why does it depend solely on when Vicroads send you the notice and not when your license actually expires or gets renewed?

"The discount has been introduced for driver licence renewals generated after 1 October 2022. This means any licence renewal notices issued via our systems from 1 October 2022 will have the discount applied where eligible."

    • +1

Same has happened to me, crappy implementation of a system. Being punished because they can't design a solution as well as I can drive

    • +1

Mine was sent on 5th Oct. Have no demerit points but still no discount. Raised an enquiry. Its been 10 days and no response. Its all a gimmick I reckon.
