Oh no, not the Ottomans again! Hide if you're Armenian… 😒

  • +5

Its "Free" on PC pass if you have that.

    • +1

Yep! This could still be useful if you've already used up your free trial. Or if you're interested in the Public Update Previews only via Steam.

I know I won’t have time to play (as proven in the last GMG fiasco) but it’s hard to resist.

    • +3

Once you get sucked in, you'll find the time to play, trust me haha. If you're short on time, the single player campaign is split into battles on a timeline and follows the story/history along, so you can squeeze one in here and there whenever you have time! :)

If actually playing is still too big of a leap, I'd recommend checking out AussieDrongo's YouTube channel where he casts highly entertaining tournament games of pro players (and are only ~15-25 mins per video).

Thanks Jimmy. Sounds interesting. I’ll check it out!

Love this game. Single player and multiplayer. New civs will help keep it fresh.

I'm not playing this unless it comes out of a Nutri-grain box

Wow, I found my Nutri-grain copy recently while decluttering.

That was a lot of fun! I remember the classic "cheese steak jimmy's" cheat code. Maybe this is why I call myself Jimmy? Hmm…

  • Wow, that means it's been over a year of HODLing for me

  • We don’t want AOE IV DLCs. We want AOM DE :(((

    Thanks. Bought one.

For some reason I just couldnt get in to this game as much as AOE2 DE, it just felt really bland comparatively.

    • +3

That's fair enough! I haven't played AOE2 DE personally, so I can't make a proper comparison (though I did muck around on the original AOE2 as a kid). From what I've read and heard, AOE2 civilisations are all pretty similar to each other, with relatively minor differences. While AOE4 civs have some major asymmetry going on, which I find brings really diverse gameplay; the map that is selected affects your civ choice, and the civ you're going up against has a major impact on your playstyle and strategy/tactics. Despite this, the game is really well balanced at the moment with all civs very close to 50% win rates across the board, which is impressive.

If you still own AOE4, I'd suggest checking out Aussie Drongo's YouTube channel. There's some really good pro tournament games casted there. They are highly entertaining and might help get you interested in the game again. I watched this one the other day and though it was pretty epic.

Well said Jimmy, Knowing the civs in AoE4 strengths and weaknesses are really important and choosing which direction(landmark or upgrade depending of civ) you choose to take each time you age up can make a big difference in game play. Aussie Drongo's a great caster 100% recommend.

        • +2

Thanks Viper! Agreed. I'm ~160 hours in and still don't fully understand all of the unique civ strengths and weaknesses. Let alone trying to play another civ effectively - it's almost like an entirely different game. I started out with the English, so things felt familiar. Then playing China blew my mind with their dynasties and imperial officials. And Mongols can pack up their entire base and move it around? Absolute madness. I've had some hilarious moments in team games where my friend playing the Mongols is about to die and he completely relocates into my base haha.

I just played the tutorial, and the little visual additions are neat (things like yards popping up around houses etc) and otherwise it seems to be the same game with clunkier controls.

But just wasn't feeling it. I feel like the RTS genre successfully evolved into either Total War games for staged battles with a turn based campaign map, MOBAs for the multiplayer micro aspect, and settlement builders for the settlement building part. This game design is one of the few which feels legitimately outdated to me because something better did arrive.

But taste is subjective, and I played a ton of AoE2 back in the day which this is the same as, so I'm sure people can enjoy this too.

      • +1

The tutorial is effectively the same thing as AOE2, but prettier.
If you're looking for something different to AOE2, try learning to play China, Mongols, or Delhi. Then play against real players.
If you're interested in medieval history, try out the campaign mode. The story/battles/videos you experience are pretty awesome.
Or perhaps it's just not for you - that's okay!!

I'm actually preferring this to Civ 6 because I suffer from analysis paralysis. A civ 6 game takes me hours upon hours as I carefully calculate out every move. I am enjoying how AOE4 has me thinking quick on the fly and learning from mistakes. And I tried but couldn't really get into MOBA's - I found Smite and LoL to be a bit repetitive and not great for solo play. But I totally agree that taste is subjective! :)

        • +1

Yeah I might give it another spin on something more challenging than the tutorial before the free time runs out. It's just the general sense of enjoyment I used to get from it being a town builder and classical battle simulator has sort of been replaced by games that focused better on those things in particular.

@CodeExplode: Ahh I get what you mean. It is quite satisfying having a really nicely laid out base, but very difficult to do in AOE4 under the pressure of versing a real player or Hard AI. It can be fun to play a more chill game against easy/intermediate AI and take it slow, but like you say, there are better games for that settlement building aspect. If you can manage to convince a mate to download it for free on Steam too, it's quite fun to play a team game, even against AI. I hope you can find a little aspect of enjoyment out of it! :)

Sorry, Immortal Empires in WH3 is now vying for attention.

  • Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Steam Key GLOBAL - €5.29

Code GLAD to bring final price with payment fee to €5.86. If you are using PayPal, I find my bank (Up) is better selecting EUR currency as PayPal inflates the AUD conversion.

This version has automated farm replenishment, which IMO makes it still better than AOE4.

    • +1

Pretty decent price! Like you say, good idea to use a bank that uses the Mastercard or Visa currency conversion rates instead of PayPal. Also beware of banks/cards with international transaction fees.

Not sure what you mean with the automated farm replenishment? In AOE4, you place a farm once and it produces food forever.

      • What I mean is A02 Definitive Edition has that, which HD didn't, which is the only quality of life improvement I needed.

Like others in this thread, I just prefer AOE2 & farm replenishment was my only gripe before the definitive release. With that I can stay on AOE2.

        • +1

Ahh I see! It's kinda crazy to think you had to manually replenish farms! Very nice improvement.

I'd love to revisit AOE2 but I don't think I'd be able to handle the graphics.
