Advice on Tyres for a Ford Territory

Hello legends,

I drive a 2006 ford territory. It goes well and I live up near Healesville and do about 20% dirt road driving.

Just went to get a wheel alignment and they won’t do it because of tyre tread being too low.

$950 for 4 x of GY Maxguard tyres inclusive of wheel balance, rotation, disposal of old tyres and etc.

$747 for 4 x Centara tyres with the above included too.

How is that price?

Other suggestions or deals that are good to look out for?

Thats an awful lot for no name Chinese tyres

    What are the tyre dimensions?

    • The quote from Beaurepaires says the tyres are - 235/60r17 102H. I’m in the process of learning about what that means for tyres. With the knowledge of the tyre size I’d love to hear you recommendations MS Paint. Thanks

      • 235 is the tyre width in mm
60 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width
R17 is the actual rim size in inches
102 is the load rating (how much weight each tyre can handle at recommended pressure)
H is the speed rating (how fast you can go on that particular tyre)

$656 + 8% cashback with cashrewards via tyroola but you will need to go to Kilsyth for fitting. This if for GY Maxguard. You were quoted $950. You can get them for ~$600. They currently have $100 off 4 tyres. Worth the trip to Kilsyth I reckon and the effort to save the $350 lazy man tax. Winning.

Thank you for your detailed and diligent response. I’ll get another look at it when I arrive home and review properly. MS Paint all the way.

…do about 20% dirt road driving.

    4 x Centara tyres

Unless you drive like little miss daisy, I just wouldn't go budget chinese tyres.

    • Gotcha.

Do you have 20s on this thing?

Also, never get cheap Chinese garbage tyres.

  • I've heard of post and ghost but this one is ghost and post. WTF

    • Ghosts I can deal with, I’m more concerned about you not using dark mode…

  • Just went to get a wheel alignment and they won’t do it because of tyre tread being too low.

Low tread wouldn't effect the wheel alignment. Sounds like they want to sell you tyres.

inclusive of wheel balance, rotation, disposal of old tyres and etc

This is standard with new tyres. Mentioning rotation is rather pointless as the tyres are new.

    • Thank you. My thought is they want to sell me tyres too. I’ll ask my mate who is a mechanic what he thinks.

  • Price doesn’t mean much without a tyre size.

    • I’ll take a look at the quote. It uses the standard rims for a ford Territory XT

  • https://www.bobjane.com.au/s/235-60r17-tyres as a starting point.

you can always go up a size if they're cheaper and the weight rating is same or higher

    try 245/60/17 or 235/65/17

  • These are my tyre of choice for the territory, can be a bit expensive if not currently part of a deal though.

  • Michelin Primacy SUV.Probably the best out there.Consistently wins tyre tests & comparisons.I had a set on my CRV(now sold) superb tyre.Do NOT skimp on tyres.

    • I’ll look into them, thanks

      • They are not cheap, but well worth the money. As long as you keep your pressures correctly set & W/A & rotate regularly they will be fine.

  • Find a better tyre shop, they’re ripping you off with that wheel alignment comment and the price for those tyres. I recently bought 4 new Toyo Proxes tyres for my Territory for $840 under a ‘buy 4 pay for 3’ offer.
