Advice - Options - phone upgrade - Vodafone Contract

My phone recently died and I have 8 months left on a 24 month contract with Vodafone. So I spoke to a Vodafone rep and have been advised to pay $380 cancellation fee and set up a new contract, however I am not willing to pay the fee but want a new phone.

Does anybody have an advice on what I should do? Wait it out or give in?

  • Surely buying yourself a new phone outright won't cost $380?

Edit: I mean, look at it this way, you've only lost 1/3 of the value of the phone since you had the use of it for 16 months. Just write it off and go forwards.

    • The cancellation fee will cost $380.
      Yeah that's true. Thanks

      • Buy a new smartphone outright (not necessarily from VF), move the SIM in it and finish your contract. All you have lost is 8 months worth of phone life plus any remaining life you might have got from it after end of contract. At the rate smartphone prices are plunging, that's not as much money as it was years ago.

  • Wait it out for 4 months.

Then the remainder 4, call them up again and say you want a new contract. Generally for loyal customers or for customers with big caps they're more willing to waive the remainder few months of your contract.

What sort of phone is it? If it's a high end phone like SGS2, maybe it's worth repairing it, but otherwise I'd ditch the device and get something like a Samsung Galaxy W or similar Android mobile.

    • I had the HTC desire HD but due to liquid damage they will not replace my phone so I went to another vendor to fix my phone. Recently started stuffing up again, it not worth getting a fix if I have 8 months left.

I don't know if I can last with a brick phone for 4 months.

      Thanks for the advice!

  • Is your phone from Vodafone contract?
If yes, I believe they includes 24 months warranty…

    • Yeah I am on a plan with Vodafone for 24 months but the warranty will not cover liquid damage. If I asked them to replace my phone chances are likely they will blame it my previous report which was for liquid damage.

  • I have been with three and now vodafone for 10 years.
If you can sweet talk your way through to the correct dept, you should be able to arrange a new contract, with no exit charge.

I am curious about the warranty mentioned above ?

Which phone did you have ?
My Galaxy S2 went dead a few months after I got it.
It also was getting very hot, during the blackout.
Some how I got back in.
I figured that the vibrator got stuck, and was shorting.
I went to every setting I could find related to the vibrator, TO TURN THEM ALL OFF
Have not had any trouble since.

    • I started with 3 and moved to Vodafone for 4 years? Every time I there they are cranky and not so helpful. I had the
HTC desire HD but due to liquid damages , odafone doesn't cover for it. I have 8 months to go. I have been eyeing on the HTC One X

due to liquid damage they will not replace my phone

For future reference, next time your phone comes into contact with moisture, simply pull it apart as far as it will go straight away and bury the whole lot in rice - works a treat.

    • Most phones have a white sticker on it, as does the battery, any contact with moisture and it turns pink/red. The Iphone has it near the charging connector.

      • Whether it turns pink or not is not the issue - with doing nothing, the phone is stuffed. The idea of burying it in rice it to keep it working.
