How Many Spam Calls Do You Get a Day?

I’m not sure it’s only me but I receive a few spam calls a day almost every day.

Phone numbers of callers look legit (like Aussie numbers) so I pick up, sometimes it’s hung up upon picking up or it speaks a foreign language (mainly Chinese pre recorded) so I have to hang up. I don’t recall I have ever had a spam call last year but it’s different this year.

Is it because the government CovidFree app got hacked and possibly sold to the third party?

I barely get spam calls, not even one a week. This is how I have minimized unwanted calls, so far it has worked well, BTW I've had my current number for over a decade.

    • Registered my mobile number at www.donotcall.gov.au
    • Only give out my number to the critical services I sign up (e.g: banks, utilities, delivery services etc..) for everything else I use a dummy number like 0400000000 (enough to pass a validation check, but not a valid number so I’m not inadvertently nominating some one else to get spammed) , and for the rare pesky service that wants to verify the number I have a $5 Aldi long expiry pre-paid SIM in an old phone. I rarely ever need to use it, but its there if I need it.
    • If I receive a marketing call from one of the few companies I’ve given my number to, I let them know I’m not interested in receiving further marketing calls (in my experience this generally works)
    • I’ve been using Google nexus / pixel phones for almost a decade. Google’s spam detection has improved quite a lot over the years, so that helps too.
    • This should works cause I do the same!

    • Good advice but sadly this won't protect you from the calls OP is taking about.

These are spoofed numbers likely from overseas.

For Android users, you can install the Google phone app and message app and use it instead of the built in app.

  • Atleast a couple during the day and mostly scam calls from scammers in India. If I have nothing to do, I play along for a couple of minutes and frustrate them further.

  • Rarely.

Don’t have a home phone and don’t give my number to shops when they ask so they can text a receipt.
Never enter competitions, they don’t give away stuff for free, your details are on sold to marketers.

  • Having a Google Pixel has saved me from this nightmare.

    • please tell me more, what is the feature called?

for the past month, probably 1. But prior to using that Google Assistant feature of answering calls, probably 3 a week. But once I started using a bot to answer a bot, I guess my number got removed from their database.

for reference: this is the feature.

  • increased for sure vs last year but my pixel and telstra is blocking most

  • Scams are everywhere, I have experienced followings:
    1. Calls providing investment advice, followed by fake "professional" website and investment updates PDF file via email. They got my contact via my business website.
    2. Calls from India disguising as Microsoft consultants etc.
    3. Calls by notorious Taiwanese scammers disguising as Chinese government agencies, yeah, the family name shown in phone book is where they find me and others in the particular ethnic group.
    4. Fake ask for quote (supplying parts) for UN operation in Africa by email.
    5. SMS for online gambling and hot chicks sites

  • these days its like 3 a week, plus text with links

  • I very rarely get spam calls (maybe twice a month, the usual "ATO is hunting you down" style things) - but I get a LOT of spam texts.

  • yeah recently more than before, sometimes several a day

it's quite ridiculous that with all the jumps and hoops we need to do these days (to proof that we are not scammers)

these people are freely operating with outbound phone lines and even domain names set up and functioning

why the hell are we scrutinizing everyone then, if actual scammers are unbothered by this? rhetorical question :)

  • recently around 5-10 a day.
All our numbers are on do not call register, I'ts ridiculous.

  • I generally forward all scam calls to my cat, so i've been struggling lately for them.

They make my day, and I love them. I've been called every curse word under the sun, but still can't get enough of it.

I've been flat out at work lately, so I usually tell them my cat will converse with them, and when he starts crying into the phone cos he's a hungry fat ****, they hang up.

  • I got a missed call today, android didn't screen it as spam, but when I called back the auto message said it was Ozbargain. Classic. Where can I collect my prize?

  • I usually get voice recorded messages which then in turn leads to some random indian speaking gibberish.

  • -1

Often several per day. Sometimes none if lucky.

Use the hiya service it helps filter out more of these annoying robo callers.

Seems the Chinese speaking fedex scam is the flavour of the moment.

    • looks good, does it have personal edition or only business?

      • +1

Mine is personal. Works well as an extra layer of filtering. Android users get sales for yearly plan deals etc regularly. Believe they have partnered with Samsung.

  • I just got a spam call today and the other caller said she is calling from Telstra with Indian accent (and very loud background noise) and I said ‘are you calling from India?’ And she hung up.

Most of the spam and scam calls that I get these days come from voip numbers in ranges assigned to one particular voip provider. On a bad day it could be over 10 calls…

I used crazytel for my voip and I have had enough so goodby to calls from that spamscamhouse voip provider.

    1. Download from https://www.thenumberingsystem.com.au/#!/number-register/sea… the option "Download the entire register of numbers"

    2. Open in a excel spreadsheet

    3 Insert a new column I

4 Insert this excel into I2 . It replaces characters that are different between D2 and E2 with a dot and prepends "+61" creating a filter for the number range I want to loose
    ="+61"&CONCAT(IF(MID(D2,ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&LEN(D2))),1)=MID(E2,ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&LEN(E2))),1),MID(E2,ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&LEN(E2))),1),"."))

5 copy I2 down over all the rest of the rows in the table

6 Filter the "Allocatee" column for the particular spam/scam friendly voip providers you want so say good by to

7 use the appropriate contents of column I in your crazytel "LIST OF CALLERS TO ALWAYS BLOCK (BLOCK LIST)"

In my case now all calls from that provider will go and have a nice chat with my old mate lenny as my block list diverts to lenny :) ( https://lennytroll.com/ ) :)
