Tried this before. This is inferior to the other basmati rice woolies sell - the one in a white cloth sack

Hmm I felt Alishaan is far superior to the white cloth sack basmati (i.e.Riviana Basmati Rice)

      • Rivana, is that bad is it ?

I don’t really used to cook/eat that much rice but thought I’ll change that… Ended up buying the 5kg sack of Rivana Basmati, kinda bummed now after reading your comment.

I'm not sure, tell me if others think otherwise. I used to buy Riviana for years because it was very cheap (like $5 or $6 per 5kg when half price)

Their prices have gone up significantly so I thought I might as well buy Alishaan since they are about the same during half price sale.

This’ll sound weird but I don’t know what to compare it with. Because I didn’t grow up eating a lot of rice.. so I don’t know what good rice is really supposed to taste like. And I only started cooking it in these past couple of years.
Maybe in a few years I’d be able to tell the difference between two brands of rice.

@Gervais fanboy: It sounds like you don't have a rice cooker. It makes the difficulty of cooking perfect rice go away forever, so you can just focus on tasting the different brands of rice (with the appropriate dish). It'll give you a new lease on rice.

I'm a weeb, so Tiger, Zojirushi, Panasonic are all the best-rated Japanese rice cooker brands. Cuckoo is the Korean equivalent. Much like Korea and Japan themselves, Cuckoo may be as good or better, but I'm still recommending the Japanese ones.

              • @Meconium: lol I think you are onto something here..

The dummy that I am, I bought one of those cheap Kmart rice cookers and absolutely hated it.
Now I only cook rice on stove top.
I’ll buy a proper cooker next time.

@Gervais fanboy: Worth it. You can use it to steam veggies while the rice is cooking too, and make various dishes in it if you like. Carrot cake comes out surprisingly perfectly and moist in a rice cooker incidentally.

      • Riviana in the white bag is terrible. Chalky. Indian basmati has been better in my experience

      • Weird. I felt Alishaan was tougher and drier compared to the other.

      • I have had mixed experiences with Riviana and aalishan. Both used to be good but now they're average basmati. I'd suggest to try the Riviana small pack (1kg I think) before you buy the 5kg.
This Alishan deal is very average quality basmati rice, and its 5kg.

  • I just cooked these yesterday, no issues. These actually came better than my usual buy from Indian Grocery shop.

    • Got 2 bags this mrng from Woolies. Looks like its not a long grain one :)

    • You miscounted the number of "a"s.

    • They are packaged in Haryana, India…

  • I actually prefer the Woolies brand in the orange bag

  • I'm happy with it, I recommend washing it well.

Rice, any kind needs to be washed and soaked for a bit before cooking. Different yields of the same variety of rice will require different quantities of water. Rule of thumb, when using a new bag of rice, always use 1 cup of rice to 2 cup of water (when cooking in a rice cooker) if the rice comes out too mushy, reduce the amount of water for next try. If the rice is too dry doesn't feel fluffy then add some extra water for next time. If using aged rice then use 1 cup rice = 2 1/2 cup water. The older the rice the better the quality.

  • reminded me of Heineken beer packaging :D
