Get Used to Food Shortages: Chicken, Dairy, Veggie Prices Predicted to Rise Again

Australians have been warned to get used to food shortages, with experts predicting more price rises for grocery staples such as chicken, dairy products, oils and leafy vegetables as another La Nina event is forecast, threatening to result in bare supermarket shelves.

Food producers have been forced to pass on price increases to customers as they grapple with higher input and raw material costs as a result of Russia’s war on Ukraine, while worker shortages across the supply chain lead employers to higher overtime or temporary wage rates.

“We can expect now that this year it might be a bushfire, next year it will be a flood, god knows when a hurricane or a typhoon will come and hit the wrong place. [We’re] not preparing for the end of the world, but prepare for these disruptions becoming more frequent … and learn to live with that.”

….more shrink-flation, empty shelves and massive price hikes incoming. batten down the hatches ozbargainers…!

388 million to ukraine for military assistance!

        • Hey it's only our tax money, get back to work slave.

        • +2

Only 388? They need a lot more than that.

  • Tip of the iceberg as far as the war on food is going.

The iceagefarmer (youtube) has been keeping tabs on it for last few years and even The Highwire show this week did a good summary of current world events.

You vill eat ze bugz und you vill be happy.

Increased numbers of natural disasters. How are you going to prevent those? Climate change isn't an issue according to many.

Monetary inflation. What did you think would happen when governments handed out trillions of dollars in attempt to prevent worldwide recessions? Kicked the can down the road a while and softened the landing a bit, but it's not a surprise.

Russian invasion into Ukraine. How are you going to prevent this? Just tell Ukraine to give up? Putin is a "genius" according to some, so not much the rest of the world can do unless you're fine with countries just being invaded by any large neighbouring country? Strange stance considering our closest neighbours.

But considering you're on ozb you're already ahead of the curve in fiscal responsibility and getting better than inflation levels of value out of your money. What's the worry :)

This is being normalised in our society.

Take up fishing, grow your own veggies.

Honestly though I think whilst some rising costs are unavoidable, there’s a lot of hype and marketing around food shortages to get people to accept price rises.

In reality a lot of people will just stop buying some things if they are too expensive and competition, supply/demand will help to to adjust. A lot of more expensive food from the supermarket just gets marked down, donated or thrown out. If they aren’t profiting they’ll adjust pricing.

    • Avoid growing food in Sydney due to lead levels in soil.

I guess fishing is okay despite sewage runoffs and mercury levels. Oh wait..

      • +2

It depends what part of Sydney and how you grow your veg but for sure lead can be an issue, you can test your soil. Mercury in fish is usually only an issue with shark, tuna and orange roughie, which wouldn’t be a big issue for shore based anglers (defeats the cost saving having a boat. Realistically if you’re buying veggies and fish you have no way of knowing what the lead and mercury levels are either. Anyway my point was there are other ways if things get desperate- I suspect it won’t get that bad though.

Try raised garden beds if that's an issue. Also not everywhere in Sydney is contaminated.
Hardest part is actually growing the plant. You can't just suddenly become a pro and grow all the veges to sustain yourself as most people nowadays don't have any proper gardening knowledge or experience at all.

        • Whilst I agree with you. I don’t think the point is to grow all your own veggies straight away or even ever. But if people do a small amount of veggies that would otherwise be expensive it means not being 100% reliant on supermarkets. I prefer to grow stuff that takes minimal effort or cost but might be expensive to buy and yields enough to actually avoid buying some veggies. Snowpeas have been a great crop this year.

      • Raised garden beds is an option.

  • Not to mention the heatwave in China causing havoc and worldwide impacts on food, etc.

    • what person in Australia would buy grown or made in china food???????

      • Almost everyone…

      • Have you ordered out? The food is likely from cheapest places, why would food from China be an exception?

      • It’s more what China will now have to import, so global demand and prices will increase. Same amount of people in the world, less food to go around.

How is chicken, salad and potatoes farming in Australia are referenced to the deoccupation of Ukraine from USA NATO muppets regime by Russia?

    • +1

      potatoes

Nobody said "potatoes", Michael. Do try to stop making things up.

      How is chicken…referenced

We'd try to explain the supply chain implications of locking up a quarter of the world's total wheat supply (and 60% of sunflower oil exports, and 30% of barley exports, and a significant section of the fertiliser market) but "implications" has four syllables.

    • +1

Okay, those blue/yellow ads we run to support this popular Ukraine side are so expensive. We need to hike up our product prices! That's why everything costs more /s

  • No more Ukraine lol

  • +2

Climate change is already here despite what people want to believe.

    • this is not solely climate change that is driving these price increases

      • as another La Nina event is forecast

I would say climate change is a factor driving these increases. I didn’t say climate change was the only cause, although since I didn’t mention the war I guess it could have been construed that way.

  • You will eat the bugs.

    • -1

theyre wont be many other options it looks like

  • +2

Yeah prices have increased by avocados still cheap

As long as you choose seasonal you be fine

  • -1

Get over it. I'm really sick of hearing this fear mongering like as if it's a complete surprise how cheap everything is and how good people have it compared to decades gone by. Prices go up they're more expensive than they were 10, 20, 30+ years ago. People have had it too good for too long and now are shocked to realise things cost money to produce. Shock horror!

Curb your frivolous spending and you'll be fine. The solution starts from yourself not being a sook and expecting the world to change for you.

    • -1

i ncoming empty shelves, shrinkflation and unaffordable food for many….but yeah "get over it"

      • -4

Yep, get over it. The problem is you.

        • -2

sure mate …..you can eat my ration bugs of bugs & synthetic meats when the time comes

          • -4

@franco cozzo: Keep them and enjoy living in fear of your own unwillingness to adapt and survive. The rest of us who don't just give up and expect someone else to solve our problems for us will be fine.

            • -1

@Bonsaichop: adapt by paying 50% on essential groceries and not eating because the shelves are empty….great plan!

              • @franco cozzo:

                great plan!

So what do you see are the contributing factors to current food price inflation and what solutions do you think would resolve them?

If adapting is such a "great plan" clearly you must have less sarcastically toned "great plan" alternative would could get behind?
