Sounds like you're just starting your whisky journey. Glenlivet 12 would be a better place to start out of these. It's a smooth easy drinking single malt to start with. Chivas 12 is more suited to mixing.
I think he's referring to chivas 18 yo (blue pack). But do agree glenlivet 12 is a good choice :)
The gold chivas (called xv) isn't bad to sip on neat. But for a similar or even cheaper price you'd be able to get glenlivet 12 which is very decent if you are beginning your whisky journey

Makers Mark @ $65 for 1 litre isn't much to rave home about. That's around the normally discounted price at BWS.
