      Just tried this. Received a call and they denied the deal for me saying I am not eligible. I went for the physical sim instead of the e-sim which may have been my mistake.

        On their map it says sorry no 5g but the colour on my postcode says 5g max outdoors. Don't know wtf that's about.

        Inside I get 1mbps download but on the veranda it shoots up to between 5-20mb

      Yeah, they will say you need to migrate it to the system. Which to me its a mess, since you don't get any billing breakdown (pdf). Also, it is auto debit, theybjust charges you whatever amount they want.

    My postcode is eligible but just curious as to why postcodes have anything to do with it? Like I'm guessing it'll work anywhere, I'm assuming my SIM won't stop as i drive through an ineligible post code.

      If you are in an area where there isn't 5G coverage your phone drops back to using 4G. Phone calls work the same, but data is transferred much slower. Your phone only stops working if there's no phone service coverage at all. In the case of Vodafone it shares resources with Telstra in country areas, so a phone with a Vodafone SIM in it would be able to get and make calls through any available Telstra tower. Which there's a lot more of. A phone with an Optus SIM in it would lose the ability to make or receive any calls except emergency calls if there's no Optus tower in the area.

    The catch is you've actually got to be able to get Optus 5G coverage.

    My postcode - outer suburban Adelaide - is eligible for the deal, but when I look at the coverage map the local tower just provides a little pool of 5G in its immediate area, with large surrounding areas not covered. Like Vodafone does. Whereas Telstra provides blanket 5G coverage.

    I know from experience that Optus has 5G transmitters in all the local towers, but is using beamforming - a strong signal in some directions and a weak one in others - to only provide 5G coverage to the parts of the adjacent suburbs where there aren't any customers who'll use it. The ducks on the lake can get 5G. And the birds in the wetlands. And the chickens in the processing plant. But blocking the main residential areas of the suburbs from getting and using 5G. I know its not that the geography or equipment in the tower means Optus can't deliver 5G to the whole area, because after power outages it comes up with beamforming off until its turned on, and for that time it delivers 5 bar 5G coverage to the whole area.

    Optus 5G should be cheap. Because you probably can't actually get it. It wants to be able to say its got 5G on its towers, but at the same time allow as few customers as possible to use it. Its a scam.

    I would strongly advise anyone who wants to take up this deal to not just check whether their suburb is eligible, and their local tower is 5G enabled, but to also go to the coverage map and check their address gets 5G coverage.

      Telstra will not price match anything, at best you can ask for a $5/$10 discount.

      You'll get better pricing on a Telstra Wholesale provider if the wholesale network is suitable to your location.

      Woolworths Mobile comes with a monthly 10% off shopping voucher.

    Great timing been needing to get off vodaphone and my bill cycle ends in 3 days - thanks!! Hopefully the speeds will be closer to Telstra… couldn’t justify the price when i moved back Metro, but Telstra’s 5G speeds being 400Mbps+ in country towns and Metro SA was a treat I surely miss.

    Interestingly, I had a service with Optus (prepaid 50% off) then added a service to get the Samsung A8 for free. Then for some reasons they deactivated my first service. Asked them to reactivate cause I get 30gb for $7.5. and for obscure reasons I still get my 30gb in the data pool but they are not charging me the $7.5.

      Myself and my wife signed up online about 2 years ago, both got iPhone 11 each and ported our numbers. Phones arrived in the mail, my wife had no issue activating her sim but my sim wouldn’t activate. The porting of my number was initiated though but never completed and Optus couldn’t work our why. I ended up losing my number but got a free iPhone 11 - never ever got a bill for my service/phone.

      tldr: They autoactivate the sim when it's delivered (not when you put it in the phone) so if you aren't home you'll be left without your mobile service. Don't bother going into a store or through the My Optus app for eSIM - you have to call their tech line to switch to eSIM.

      Got a call to confirm my order for eSIM but they then called back 5 minutes after, saying that due to a technical issue I would be sent a physical sim. Was told there was no way to fix the order (on the call and I also called the tech support after who said the same thing) and I would have to go into a store or call support to get it switched to an eSIM.

      • This morning got a text saying it would be delivered today and to have ID ready. Then got a StarTrack 'we missed you so left item at your address'
      • 20 mins later my bank acc was charged and got an email saying they had activated the sim.
      • This deactivated my current eSIM from my previous provider with the number attached so was left without my personal mobile service.
      • Left work to go get the physical sim and went into an Optus store.
      • Store said they couldn't change it - had to be done via the app then spent 45mins trying to get the MyOptus App working but couldn't.
      • They gave up in the end and said to try contacting the App chat technical support or just wait a few days and hope it works.
      • Said they would have to send out another physical card but with a QR code on it and no idea how long that'll take.
      • Main SIM is a work number that I need to keep - so I'm without my personal number until I can get the eSIM working… :/

      Whilst writing this was going through the My Optus technical App support chat. They have advised they cannot do eSIM switch only physical stores and the voice team. Despite having just told them the physical store said to try via the in-App chat. Guess ill be giving the tech support a call :( .

      EDIT: surprisingly good customer service via the tech line (way better than the rep who called to confirm the order). 12 minutes total call time including all the screening menus and been told they’ll send out an email with the eSIM in about 15 minutes (‘but may take up to 4 hours' - either way beats the 7 days I was expecting to wait if they sent out a physical card).

    Nice! Got it done successfully! Wasnt sure id make it through. First time didnt work coz i gave wrong post code when asked. I didn t think the call centres would actively outbound you but they do (i was planning on waiting for a quiet day to call them or giving up)
    The second time I was called, I wasnt asked for postcode. This was done with Esim btw. Id prefer physical sim but as u know 🤫

    This was a time frame of about a week and a half id say
