Problems with Using Chromecast at Another Location

I have been able to successfully connect Chromecast at home, but am having trouble using it elsewhere. I have reset the Chromecast. It connects ok, but it won’t work.

Any suggestions?

  • Have you connected it to the wifi available at the new location?

Is it out of wifi range if you are in the same house?

Your description is a little vague.

  • It’s within wifi range but I’m not sure if it connects to the wifi. Not very tech savvy!

  • Based on the info you have given the only thing I can suggest is to check that your phone is connecting to and using the new WiFi network, then connect the chromecast, then see if you can see/connect to your chromecast in Google Home.

  • If you want to use the Chromecast at a different location, you need to connect both the Chromecast and also whatever device you want to cast, on the same wifi… if that’s what you mean

    • Yes that’s what I’m trying to do

      • I thought this is the answer to your question, but your response seem misunderstood. Supasaiyan meant for you to connect both Chromecast and your device (most likely your phone) to the same wifi network

If you're hotspotting, you need to use a third device.
You can't control a Chromecast from the same device as the one you're hotspotting.

The other issue you might be facing if using Guest WiFi is that they have Local Networking disabled (which is the way it should be set up in the vast majority of cases). So devices connected to the same WiFi network can only see the Internet, not other devices connected to the WiFi.

  • Elsewhere as in, elsewhere in your house? Or elsewhere as in, an entirely different place?

Needs to be connected to wifi. which means configuring it through your Google Home app. Chromecasts aren't meant to be pick and and move.

    • A different place

  • If you're at a hotel/AirBNB and using their commercial wifi they've likely locked down the ports for the Chromecast to successfully connect to both your phone/laptop and the Google servers. Any devices can't see other users on the same network.

Only solution is using a hotspot which requires a third device for the initial setup process.

    • Thanks, I tried hotspotting to no avail!

      • Read my post above re potential Hotspotting issue.

And for ease of use, change your Hotspot Name and Password to match your home WiFi Settings.
Otherwise you'll need to set up your Chromecast from factory settings each time you swap between Home and Hotspot.

        • It might have something to do with local networking being disabled as a guest user. Should I be able to use the data on my phone to connect?

@aocal: Yes you can hotspot your phone data (noting that all streaming data will come off your Phone's data allowance), but only with another device to act as the controller.
