Travel Insurance for The US

Going to the US at the end of the year.

I know credit cards have travel insurance and I have travelled before and luckily never need assistance with it, but just want to know from people that had to use the credit card insurance, what does it cover? Easy to contact the centre? Also is better to get proper travel insurance? What was your experience?

I’m asking all this because I’m going to the US and we all know over there the health system is crap. Any advice is welcome.

As we should know by now, not every insurance is the same, and not every bank providers the exact same insurance.

Check you credit card provider’s PDS and coverage to see if suits your use case.

Typically you’ll find they won’t cover you for more than 90 days.

Do you own research, it’s an ocean out there.

    • Hey mate yeah I know about all different things but I want to know more about experiences dealing with them. I’m not going to a jungle adventure just cities so maybe a break an arm or get sick from food etc etc. and how was the process with credit card or private insurance.

It's worth spending a bit more for top-shelf travel insurance, if it's the US.

Last time we went, our asthmatic kid had a minor episode. We had to see a doctor and get antibiotics, but cost for something as simple as that was like $500 USD. Premium travel insurance for the whole family paid for itself twice over, plus we had the peace of mind the whole time knowing that if something does go wrong, it won't ruin our expensive precious holiday we'd saved up for years for.

(We used Southern Cross Travel Insurance, not sure if they are still the best rated, this was 2017 or so).

Just make sure you are definitely covered for medical.

Make sure it's an insurance that pays the bills for you, not pays you back when you submit receipts. I've never had that problem, but I know a guy that got stung with that.

    • Oh wowww, good thinking on that one. Definately don’t want to be out of pocket while I’m over there.

"I’m going to the US and we all know over there the health system is crap"

Well that's what they told you on the ABC right?

A Ferrari does cost more than a Commodore, but that does not make the Ferrari 'crap'. The US contributes the most of the world's medical research and that half of the top 10 Medical Universities in the world are American, or that the US has the highest cancer survival rates in the world, and produces most of the medicines and new life-saving treatments and techniques…
Good things cost money. So sure it's not the cheapest, but it does in fact offer the very best health service of anywhere in the world.

My tip would be to make sure you have good insurance, then you will be in very good hands, the very best in fact.

I think the health services in the US are gold standard, but the whole health system over there is a complete embarrassment in any country.

      • gold standard when you have insurance

The United States ranks last overall, despite spending far more of its gross domestic product on health care. The U.S. ranks last on access to care, administrative efficiency, equity, and health care outcomes, but second on measures of care process.

but the whole health system over there is a complete embarrassment in any country.

Yeah contributing the most to modern medicine and saving the the most amount of lives is so embarrassing. This is the mindset of your average ABC viewer these days. Maybe switch off the TV and get out more…

  • Thought I ask if anyone have suggestions on which provider to go to and any discount code to share? Looking for family travel to USA. sadly missed out on discount code fod Allianz and can’t seem to find any others out there.
