New MacBook Pro Launched

Ok so they are a bit pricey starting at $2499, but the 0.8 inch thickness and an amazing retina screen makes them mighty tempting!

What do you guys think?

  • I think, that's a lot of pixels to be pushing for such a light video card.

    • would you be so kind as to elaborate as reviews by media sites I have seen dont mention anything about this being an issue.

      • Well of course they haven't, what can't push out that much pixels when it comes to wall-papers and desktop browsing.

        • I think some of the people who review these things are fanboys.

        • Pimko

Back again - can you elaborate using some info rather than keep repeating the same point.

Why is it a "light" video card - what cant it do etc.

        • the thing is this does 20fps for Diablo III on 2880 x 1800, which frankly isn't good enough for me personally and most gamers. Other even more stressful games will fare even worse on the same resolution and be unplayable.
As Anand noted most apps and games haven't been developed for 2880 x 1800 screen resolutions and this is shown in the Portal 2 screen.
Unless games get better support for the 2880 x 1800 res screen, I find it useless to have such a good screen.

Also it is a GT 650 and not a GTX series. I would have loved if they had a GTX 670M to this, but knowing Apple and that metal unibody, they don't mix well.

So its not a laptop for gamers, but then which one ever has been,. My gamer son still lugs around this heavy box, although he has accepted that a flat screen is now viable…

Spawn Point. Thank you for elaborating on behalf of Pimko, because without that statements like they made are meaningless. Guess they are too busy with their games to understand that.

        • Reduce the resolution then if you want to play a game and use the normal resolution for other stuff

  • woah! but the cost :(

  • crazy

Is the retina display worth the extra $500?….

  • +2

Well it's about time that display resolutions increase on laptops! I hope Apple made other manufacturers wake up and increase the display resolution of the windows counterparts.

I am hoping to get a Quad HD TV next year and a full HD phone maybe even at the end of this year. Things are looking up!

    • and then apple sue's X company for using their Retina Patent "rolls eyes"

      • Sue for using a high resolution?

Yer I'm sure Apple would do that.

  • It's a thing of beauty.

  • bit of glitter.

  • What's the actual resolution of a 'retina display' in pixels x pixels?
I'm bummed they ditched the 17inch model, not that I could've afforded it, man is that a price hike or what… and I thought Apple's were overpriced fashion accessories before.

    • Never mind, found it:
      2880 x 1800
Damn that's a lot of pixels.

      • Oops I forgot to refresh before replying :)

    • The ppi (pixels per inch) varies due to differering distances from the screen. I can't quote numbers right now but the MBP ppi is different to the iPad and iPhone ppi. Hopefully where I read this is correct.

Actual res of MBP Retina is 2880 x 1400.

Bummed there is no 13 inch with Retina. I would have been all over that.

    • same..would love it

    • October

  • So not even the OSX desktop supports the 2880 x 1800 resolution?
    Then what is the point?

A few games support the resolution, but it's a Mac device.
Macs aren't known for their huge library of games.
And even if every game somehow supported it, are people going to be fine with the ~20 fps they get?

At least it should be good for graphical work.

    • There is a third party program that enables the full resolution for desktop usage.

Pretty pointless though as most of the icons are too small to see.
