That pretty great deal! I got it for slightly cheaper (30% off) during the last round of upsized cashback - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/721843

Lame, can't add more than 1 to cart.

    • +1

I just ordered 2 with the coupon

    • I bought 3x bags of dry food with the discount

    • Just the larger bags it wouldn't let me add multiple. I purchased 1 large and 2 small to still get a bulk amount and make use of the larger bag discount.

Thanks OP - just saved $50 on my regular cat food order.

Does anyone know if there's any science of any kind to the damn varieties they offer?

Besides sizing of the biscuits and flavouring, there's like

Kitten, Adult, Longhair, Shorthair, Cat with cute nose, Ragdoll, Persian, Outdoor, Indoor, Cat that hates mice, Cat that farts too much.

Like what's the deal? I'm speculating they literally make more money on the weirdo subgenres of foods because people think it'll help? (I nearly fell for it because the Ragdoll on the front, looks like mine but my brain was telling me 'it's lies' )

    • +2

Yeah wondering that myself, usually I just make sure the animal on the package is the same species as mine then just buy that.

      • That's the problem though! What if the species specific one is 6% more money because it gets your animal love bone all engaged and your mind isn't thinking about the reality of the product.

All I can add is that there are "meant" to be nutritional" differences for some breeds, but I haven't looked into it and haven't bothered with that side of things.
What I do know (I've been told) is that dental are bigger biscuits to help scrape the teeth, little biscuits go down easier and need less chewing.
Indoor cat biscuits have less carb/fat content because the animals are likely to be less active than indoor cats. And somehow stop poos smelling as bad.
So I mix dental and indoor for my overlords.

    • Yes there's a difference in nutritional value just like how it works for humans.

Example my indoor cat who shouldn't be gaining anymore weight has been recommended to be on indoor food.

Experts (academics, not vets) believe that the non-veterinary differences are mostly bogus, and most of the veterinary ones are, also. They are all made with by products which could be good if they included some of the organs but bad if they include hair, etc. They also include carbohydrates which, in small amounts, may be good (they don't really know for sure), but a lot causes obesity which is bad.

The vet urinary one dissolves struvite stones, which the vets believe may play into urinary blockages but they don't know, really. Once the cat no longer has stones leaving the cat on it may cause other types of stones which are even worse. On the other hand, the non meat crap they put into it lowers the acid in their urine which is alleviated by something they put in the mix.

I believe the kidney vet one has lower phosphorous which is good but it also comes in dry (as the urinary one does) which is bad.

Royal Canin uses their own experts to create their products, many of which are not peer reviewed. They are marketed to vets much like human pharma was marketed to doctors before the practices were stopped.

Our 12 yo Bichon has kidney disease. We were told by our vet that she needed to moved to the Royal Canin Renal food or the Hills K/D food. All I can say is that since the change to these from the Big Dog for Small Dogs, Raw BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), she has had much improved blood tests, better appetite and a calmer disposition. We had a lot of trouble getting supply (wet food as she won't eat kibble) for 6 months up until a month ago, and our vet refused to tell me how to make an equivalent diet at home (I think they just don't have training in that). I found one online, so I could at least feed her until the product was available again. I don't have any other information other than that anecdotal evidence.

      • +2

To be fair, kidney food is like science proper though.

Wifes cat has kidney issues and ate the kidney food and it's totally helped, however that one in particular is targetting an issue, it's arguably a medicine for the cat.

However a bag of food labelled "longhair" or "ragdoll, with a cross of persian, lol" is perhaps a bit more markety and less science (is my guess)

    • I don’t own purebred cats so can’t say on those targeted varieties, but the oral, hairball and indoor varieties actually deliver what they promise. I was skeptical and disgusted by the ingredients used by RC, so we switched our cats to premium, less filler kibble for a while until one starts hacking hairball and the vet said we need to brush the other’s teeth. Now I make my own mix with the premium kibble and some RC to address whatever issue my cats have. The issues have either stopped or improved, so I can only assume that they actually work.

There are certainly big differences for the diets like indoor/outdoor, weight loss, diabetes, urinary care etc.
Certain species are prone to higher incidence of deficiencies or genetic disease.

For example - British Shorthairs are prone to gaining weight, Royal Canin have added chicory root to the diet to add more fibre, without the starch that cats can't handle - bulks up the food, increases mass in the intestinal tract so makes the animal feel full. It's also a probiotic - supports a balanced microbiota and decreases chronic inflammation (leaky gut) and helps smooth motility.
The weight problem may predispose them to arthritis, they've added hydrolysed cartilage as a source of chondroitin, a precursor for cartilage synthesis which may help with arthritis pain. Suggestive research only, so who knows, but it isn't going to do any damage.

Most of the weight loss diets use pysillium (metamucil) or beet pulp to act as that insoluble fibre and bulk up the food as above, also in most glucose control diets for diabetes.

I notice most of the cat diets say "A diet promoting drinking and containing a precise mineral content to support urinary health" or similar which is the best way to decrease workload on the kidneys, by controlling mineral/ion balance intake- but multiple breeds of cat are prone to developing chronic kidney disease (burmese, siamese, russian blue, main coon) or polycystic kidney disease (persians) so that doesn't necessarily support buying one of these over another or a targeted 'urinary care' diet.

From a behavioural perspective the different shaped and sized kibble do make sense and might make eating easier or suit picky cats, but thats not to say normal pellets aren't completely fine, this feels like a Alfa Romeo addition.

The food we normally get has been jacked up to RRP. It's normally about 20% cheaper on PP. Still about 5% cheaper than the alternatives though.

    Works for prescription/vet range too.

  • One of my items sold out while I was in the checkout. Still saved about $30 though.

I had the same issue with another pet shop/supplier

    There are no free lunches!

  • Waiting for that special again.
Got it a few when it the website has a special and it goes down to $100 from $140 for German shepherd puppy 12kg food and cashback is also 20% or 30% back.
End up getting it for 70 to 80 instead of double
But do have about 6 months supply of puppy food now thanks to these deals
