  • sigh, inflation finally hit coffee for me - it's now $2 more expensive per kg bag!

    • Still totally worth it!

  • Need help here and if anyone can answer will be much appreciated. I bought a bottomless porta filter with 1 cup unpressurised basket. After looking up several forums and YouTube videos they all said the brewing time would be the same 20-30 seconds for both 1 cup and 2 cup basket. It just doesn’t sound right to me as they said a 1 cup basket would have less holes than a 2 cup basket and therefore the brew time should be the same and quantity should always be 1:2 or 1:2.5. But I counted the holes in the 1 cup basket are the same as the 2 cup basket meaning if I brew 20 seconds in a 1 cup basket I would get much more than 1:2 result.

    • +1

There should be an upper limit of coffee grounds in grams that each basket should hold (possibly 12g for the single "cup", and 18g for the 2 cup?)

I wouldn't worry about the number of holes in each basket - just adjust your grind size to get you in the ballpark of 20-30 second extractions for each basket. What machine do you have?

      • Thanks for the reply. I have an entry level De’Longhi Dedica EC685. The aftermarket unpressurised 1 cup basket has max 7 grams capacity and that is exactly how much I fill based on my digital scale. Yeah I agree that grind the beans finer can get higher resistance to extend the brew time to 20-30 seconds and still get me 1:2.5 coffee quantity. However, at the moment with 7 grams input brew for 12 seconds with 1:4 output of 28 grams, the coffee tastes towards the bitter side already. If I grind it finer I am afraid to get even bitter coffee.

        • I would not worry about the time… for now.
I’m also new and kept pulling shots with different grind setting keeping all other variables the same until I got the grind I like most.
Maybe start with that then start looking into refining puck prep.

And I suggest start timing the moment you press the button.

          • @Brakus: 12 seconds include the pre-infusion. Good thing about bottomless porta filters is any flaws in extracting process are visible, which I in fact compared the YouTube extraction videos with mine and couldn’t find any channeling or uneven tamping but the output quantity is still 1:4 with only a thin layer of crema and tastes slightly bitter. Not that I don’t like it but if I can get better crema, ignore brew time and achieve 1:2.5 it may taste even better.

            • @wtfnodeal: I usually preheat the portafilter to get rid of any bitterness.
              30 sec extraction time

              • @easternculture: That’s what I do as well, I “prime“ the brew head by running an empty shot 1 time for 12 seconds followed by immediate extraction. Did you run 1 shot 7 grams for 30 seconds or double shot 14 grams for 30 seconds? How much quantity is the coffee output?

                • @wtfnodeal: Heat portafilter under hot water tap for 30 sec.
                  I do 1 shot 9 to 10 grams for 30 sec.
I tamp at about 30kg so extraction is slow but i get full flavor.
Coffee output is about 1/5 of cup i use
Grid size i set it between 10 and 12
Im using a Breville Brista Pro

                  • @easternculture: Isn’t that really course? When I’ve grinded on 6 my pour is way too fast and I tamp quite hard. To get a 30s pour I’d have to tamp as hard as I can lol. Maybe there’s something wrong with my barista express.

I include the pre infusion time too when I pull a shot. I recall this store’s rep mentioned counting from the moment it starts pouring.. so not including the pre infusion time? Have I been doing it wrong this whole time? Hmm

            • -1

@wtfnodeal: Watching youtube told me that best pre infusion time should be around 8 secs

              • +1

@Brakus: Pre infusion time is not adjustable in my entry level machine 😔, it is dead set to 3-4 seconds I believe?

              • +2

@Brakus: Really depends on your taste buds. I dont believe in this youtube crap.
Everyone is unique . Trial and error until your happy with result.

                • @easternculture: I agree but good to know the basics and logic behind it for a consistent pull

    • It's usually recommended to use the double shot basket, should be easier to get good and consistent results. I have not used the single shot buskets myself, but it does make sense given the shape of the single shot basket.

      • The shape of my single shot basket is exactly the same as my double shot basket, they both are not contoured with same amount of holes except for the double shot basket is deeper.
I don’t use double shot basket because it is too strong for a milk base 250ml cup of coffee. I usually have 2 single shots a day, one in the morning and one at noon.

        • I agree with you, I'd expect a lower time for a such single-shot basket. Unless double shot is too much coffee for you, I'd give it a try as well, just to make sure you are not missing a better coffee.

    • Try getting an extra gram or more in the basket - 8 or 9 - and go for a 1:3 ratio in 25 sec. You might have to grind a little finer. Another option, if you are set on only using a single shot basket is to get one that is contoured and has a smaller opening. My Gaggia came with one, so must be generally available.

Any better blends wasnt happy with Sumatra?

    • Hey there captain - sorry to hear the sumatra wasn't for you.
This deal is a Sumatra deal only but if you reach out on email [email protected] we can work on finding you an alternative.

      Thanks
      Dan

    • -4

I didn’t like Sumatra either. I don’t think they have anything better.

      • Oh :(thats ok im halfway through it

      • +4

I've had the Sumatra twice and it didn't really make anyone happy. We really like the Enterprise blend though.

        • I have tried sumatra and twilight. I think the biggest problem is that we have entry level machines and it's harder to work with light roast. Hence our shots are not coming out the best. I have given up as it's not the taste I want and gone back to my usual dark roasts with other brands. Yes I have to pay a lot more though

          • @hmac: What machine and grinder do you have? Do you remember what your shot times like? What are your usual dark roasts with other brands?

  • Can anyone provide grind settings for the breville grinder pro for this blend and the trailblazer?

    • +5

Hey there Paul - I will certainly help if I can.
The best thing to do, rather than suggest that the same settings suit all machines, is to "dial in" the coffee by running a couple of shots and then tweaking the settings based on the result of the shots. This can be different for each blend so it is good practice to get in the habit of doing this each time you receive/buy a new bag.

If you want some help with dialling in, give me a holla on email ([email protected]) when you have run a shot and we can talk through what you might want to tweak.
Sorry it's not a simple answer but it's the best approach.

      Cheers
      Dan

I just received my enterprise blend and not happy with the coffee. Is sumatra a stronger blend?

    • +3

Hey there Duece. Sorry to hear the Enterprise isn’t working for you. If you reach out directly on email [email protected] we will work on a solution for you.

      Cheers

      • Is Sumatra the stronger blend?

          From lighter to darker:
          Twilight
          Sumatra
          Pegasus
          Saratoga
          Colombia
          Enterprise
Stargazer - The sweetspot for me
          Timor
          Thunderchild

    hey dan
is it possible to specify if I can get the Wednesday roast? trying to push back as much as possible to finish my awful Aldi beans first..

    • Hey youngchul76. Unfortunately we don’t have a scheduling option other than our subscription service options which I know that’s not what you are asking. Each of these orders are pretty automated to be processed as quickly as possible from when you order. I hope that clarifies.

      Cheers
      Dan

  • My 2nd order of Sumatra is in!

    • Great to hear Rick!!
      Thanks so much.

Looks like you got something against Airjo. You copy pasted your text from your last Airjo post.
Coffee taste is very subjective and I think people should get a chance to try different roasters.
You won’t get your point across by highjacking a post just to slam it and advertise another. Why dont you create a new post for Pablo and Sicilia Coffee and give people credit that they are intelligent enough to choose what is better for them.

    • For the P&B, do you have to get the code from the newsletter? Is it unique?

      • Yes its unique unfortunately. Just sign up for the newsletter and it will come.

  • Does this have chocolate notes? Tend to avoid ones with fruity tastes but the website doesn't say

    • Hey there shev07. This is one of our lighter roasts and depending on your brewing technique you can certainly extract both fruity and chocolate notes.

Hopefully some of your fellow OZBargainers could offer there own experience here for you with their own techniques.

      I hope that helps.

      Cheers
      Dan

    • I think you would want medium to dark roasts.

      • Yep that's what I was thinking. Thanks for that.

Tried lighter with other companies and didn't seem to like them

        • Hey Shev07, when I tried Sumatra - I found it very fruity for my taste. I took up Dan’s suggestion and tried Enterprise and it certainly was better than Sumatra or other beans I have tried from supermarkets. But I will definitely try darker than Enterprise with my next order. Enterprise is super nice as a long black/iced long black but with milk, I felt it could be less frutier

          • @lookingforTV: Awesome thanks. I normally drink a latte.

There's been so many sales but I've always just got some beans from somewhere else and didn't need them. This was just good timing but I'll wait for a sale on Enterprise I think

Can I get a 30% off all blends with infinite uses and never expires coupon?

    • +1

Looks like discounts are available every 8-10 days anyways

      • +2

I don't really want to be at the mercy of watching OzBargain to see if I can have coffee I like.
I'm out of coffee in 1-2 days but the coffee I want isn't on special.
I'm never going to pay full-price and would like to find beans I can consistently order at a great price.
I don't really want to over-order as I'd like to have fresh beans.

        • +1

Beans in the freezer is the way to go

          • @FrugalFrella: Do you grind them while frozen or do you defrost?

            • +2

@Brakus: Once you remove from freezer don't touch until they return to normal room temperature state and they'll be as normal.

              • @fedwood: Wont they be wet due to condensation?

                • +1

@Brakus: If you open the bag you need to vacuum seal the portion you want to freeze. This way you won't get condensation inside the bag.

                • @Brakus: I was worried about that too, but if you leave them until they reach room temp before you plan on making your coffee, say the evening before for example, you wouldn't of known they had been frozen.

I think the condensation issue arises when you start handling them directly out of the freezer

            • +3

@Brakus: Always defrost overnight before opening and grinding the beans.

              • +2

@youfnc: I'm never organised enough to leave it out overnight. I just grab it out of the freezer and chuck it straight in the hopper

                • @Ant234: Yeah same here. I reckon as long as its stored properly in the freezer it should be fine and won't have any issues with condensation. I usually chuck the original bag into a zip-lock

            • @Brakus: No need to defrost. Once they are ground and prepped in the portafilter they'll be at room temp. That being said my portafilter is preheated by the grouphead before I put the grind in.

        • so you're pretty much like any other coffee drinkers, just keep an eye out for deals and subscribe to the poster…

Just curious, where is sumatra blend coming from/made from?

  • Ordered

    Will test…

  • -1

Perfect timing! Since trying AIRJO I haven't looked back… I have switching between Twilight & Sumatra blends.

  • HEALTHY - All of your orders are made with 100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC Arabica beans.

What does organic have to do with healthy? Can you please explain this?

    • Anything with the word organic instantly sounds good for you

    • +2

Hey Ragzs - great question and thanks for asking.
We choose to buy our raw beans from farms that have been certified in organic farming practices and we ourselves at Airjo HQ are certified by the Australian Certification Organic body ACO in processing and handling our organic beans.

This essentially gives us the ability to guarantee, with the highest confidence, that at no point through the production of our products, from the farm to your door, has your coffee come into contact with any chemicals deemed harmful to your health including herbicides and pesticides that can be used in the production of non-organic beans.
In the absence of organic certification, this guarantee cannot be given.

I hope that clarifies and again thanks for asking.

      Cheers
      Dan

Highly recommend all types including Sumatra. Perfect coffee! once you try Sumatra it's only time before you purchase others from Airjo!

  • Airjo is my preferred bean supplier. I am currently running low on stargazer hopefully another deal will come through soon.

  • +2

OH NO… JUST MISSED IT :(

  • +1

Dammit missed it haha, should have enough left in reserve for the week ! will keep an eye out for the next sale

  • +1

Damn just noticed this deal to late
    Another deal coming soon????

  • Onto my 3rd or 4th cup of the Sumatra. It's ok, not amazing but not terrible. Will definitely use the whole 500g though, good for my before work coffee to kick me into gear but probably not the one I'd choose for the afternoon when I feel like a coffee just for the flavour. Probably would try a darker roast blend if I was going to order from airjo again. That being said, the price is definitely right and still miles and miles better than any stale old Vittoria etc off Amazon etc.

  • I am waiting Dan…. 😉

    • The wait is over….. :)

  • Could you guys please stop spamming with the feedback emails

    • Hi guys,

Please accept our sincere apologies for the messy delivery.

We have had a small technical "glitch" with the review app this morning.
We have addressed the issue and it will not happen again.

      I apologise for the inconvenience.

      Sincerely
