N64's GoldenEye 007 Coming to Xbox Game Pass & Switch Online

No exact date yet, hence not a deal post, but just wondered what the opinion is on this? Are old-school gamers excited to play it again, or thinking it should've stayed in the past?

The classic campaign mode, transformative difficulty levels and havoc-inducing cheats will all make their return – as will the iconic split-screen local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill.

The original experience has been updated with improved control options (including dual analogue stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported), a consistent refresh rate and a full complement of achievements to unlock.

GoldenEye 007 will be made available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as part of Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, players who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics from the award-winning studio behind GoldenEye 007’s original release, will be able to download and enjoy the game free of charge.

(Rare Replay is only $12.48 currently)

And it's also coming to Game Pass and owners of Rare Replay, Xbox folks — although apparently without online play, which will remain exclusive to the Nintendo Switch Online version.

Hmm that would be a shame if online is Switch only

I'm surprised that Nintendo obtain the rights (from Rare/Microsoft) to republish on the Nintendo Switch.

Doesn’t Nintendo have some part of the license for the original? I don’t think Xbox could publish a re-release without Nintendo’s permission.

      • GoldenEye 007 was developed by Rare, which was acquired by Microsoft back in 2002.

        • +2

That doesn't mean MS got IP rights

          • +1

@sss333: My mistake. I just assumed that when Microsoft acquired Rare, they also acquired all their IP.

      • +2

Yeah, supposedly why that XBLA version that was being worked on never got released

Hopefully a better version than the 2010 'remake' that replaced Pierce Brosnan with Daniel Craig in the game (frankly just confusing, are we replacing all previous Bonds with the latest incarnation in games? Daniel Craig in From Russia With Love?)

    • +2

      Yeah it got George Lucas'd

Hey I got a cool golden pro controller with that remake!

    My reaction summed up.

It's a good thing. Split-screen coop, especially in FPS games, is kinda going the way of the dodo in console games.

i want this so bad, but i dont want my memories to be ruined by modern expectations

  • Sounds great, I hope they keep it exactly the same as it was though.

Great and incredibly under-rated game from back in the day but it would be incredibly dated now….but in fairness ill probably play it when it comes to game pass

If Microsoft could just buy Nintendo that would be fantastic

    • +6

This game is far from underrated….

    • If Microsoft could just buy Nintendo that would be fantastic

They got laughed out of the room last time they tried that lol
Sounds terrible anyway, why would you want MS to buy more of the gaming market? Competition is better for the customers

Japan would not allow an American company to buy out one of its own.

  • We've waited too long for this, bring it on!

  • -3

Finally Xbox owners will have a game worth playing!

  • +2

Imagine been able to directly buy a game and own it.

I guess this is the kind of thing (subscription BS) to look forward to with Microsoft taking over even more game studios/publishers.

    • +5

The world is moving to a subscription service for everything. Just another way companies can milk people for money continuously.

I liken it to Apple removing the headphone jack and setting that as a “standard” (and now going eSIM only, albeit for iPhone 14s or Pros only, whatever, sold in the US only for now — but we all know where we’re going now). It’s a crappy path we’re headed down.

      • It’s a crappy path we’re headed down.

More like creepy. It just so happens that every new "feature" adopted by big tech companies makes it infinitely more easier for them to own your entire personal life.

  • Lets go!!!

only the switch has online multiplayer. the xbox has local multiplayer

    • Of course the Xbox would only have local multiplayer lol.

  • Goldeneye what?

  • Bring out Perfect Dark as well please

  • Meh, I never even signed up for the Switch Expansion Pak thingy, though I do intend on trying it eventually. I already own the original Goldeneye as part of my N64 collection. I still love to play some of the games on the system, eg Paper Mario, Conkers etc, but this one has aged terribly. Even with updated controls and resolution, it's not going to be playable or enjoyable. It will just be good for a quick nostalgia hit for those who want to relive the visuals and soundtrack of their childhood.

After 25 years, GoldenEye 007 gets its first modern rerelease Friday - January 27th 2023

Xbox gets enhanced 4K visuals, but Switch gets online play.

"… As previously announced, the Switch version will be part of the awkwardly named Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which costs $50 per year" (sic) USD.

"… Xbox One and Series S/X owners, meanwhile, will be able to enjoy GoldenEye 007 as part of an Xbox Game Pass subscription or as a free DLC download that's now included with the purchase of 2005's Rare Replay."

  • Fun for those who enjoy it, but as I suspected, even donning a massive pair of 'rose-tinted glasses' I only lasted about 15 mins before it was enough. Just isn't my thing anymore.
