Community Alert: Amazon Payment Scam

Hi All,

I have recently got a notification from my commbank app that I have been charged $159.82 from Amazon (Amzn.com/bill) WA USA Card

I don't have any subscriptions or anything from Amazon. I occasionally buy from Amazon Australia.

The surprising thing was it was a debit card instead of a credit card that got charged. Which i never shared with the amazon.

I contacted comm bank on the same day and cancelled my card to avoid any future transactions and been trying to get in touch with the amazon customer service to help me find any issues. (seems like their customer service centre is overseas and it has been painful to deal with them). They are saying there are no such transactions or activity on my account.

I went online to search if anyone else had same issue and apparently it has been reported on reddit previously and even here on ozbargain.

Lot of people think that we might have used the card or been used by family or other subscriptions etc. but it seems like this charge has been appearing on many people's bank cards regardless of them buying or having any subscription. Many people reported mutliple transactions appearing on their cards.

So, i went and did some check on my statements and found there are 3 transactions that has happened in less than 9 months.

I have reported all of them to Commbank. Not sure if they will do something about it.

I am here to give an update to all community members to check their bank accounts and statements if they see these transactions randomly apperaing on their account.

Please don't ignore it. Speak to your bank. I will keep you posted if there are any updates from the bank or amazon (which i doubt from their side).

Also, please share your experience if you faced that issue as well.

I lean towards CBA was the issue.

Very interesting. But all the transactions has been amazon related. 🙄 Oh god, i hope it is not widespread and have to check through all the transactions on the account now.

      • freeze your card, change your title?

        • Already requested for new card. I didn't get what you mean by "change your title"?

  • I had a deduction on my CBA card from a legit business a week or 2 ago, which I didn't make. Interestingly it was reversed a couple of days later without me saying anything

Since then have set up app alerts to any payment coming out

I actually got altered through the in-app alert as well but there was no way to stop that transaction. It was showing that the transaction is pending. Called the bank, and they said that the transaction must go through first, then they can raise a dispute.

I have reported all of them to Commbank. Not sure if they will do something about it.

    Quite sure they have to…

  • may be start renewing your cards every few months, so you know where the card info is being leaked? I know it's a hassle to change all recurring payments, but that's what I did everytime i got charged unknowingly like this

  • Is this just a Comm Bank thing? I check my (ING) account regularly, along with my credit cards to make sure there are no spurious charges or debits. So far so good. I've just messsaged ING to find out how to set up alerts on my account to tell me of every transaction made to make sure I am keeping on top of this. So many scammers out there, it is becoming a nightmare - even with all the precautions I try to take.

Hi friend. Thanks a ton for giving insights into your story. So far bank has refunded but warned that they will take money back if Amazon persist. I am not sure what's the deal behind this all. But you have given me quite an insight and i Hope to fight till end or at least die trying :)

  • Hey everyone, quick update. I had a new card issued. Got it activated only few days back. Now back to square one as I had 2 transactions appearing again this week. $157 and $79. Calling Comm bank now. Don't what else needs to be done.
