2 Free Audiobooks Every Week until Aug 22

160

"2 Free Audiobook Downloads Each Week This Summer
June 14 - August 22, 2012

Teens and other readers of Young Adult Literature will have the opportunity to listen to bestselling titles and required reading classics this summer."

It's still a few hours to go before it starts due to timezone differences. Some of the books may be restricted to the US only, I don't know if there is IP checking involved, but a US-based VPN or IP changer should work if required. You will be asked to install an audiobook manager program called Overdrive that will do the downloading. The downloaded files are still ordinary MP3 files that you can copy to your personal media players. They also have apps for iOS and Android.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the link, are you a user of that site? I have tried a dozen times to send a message to them and it keeps saying go back and type password which it gives you and it doesn't matter how many times I type it I get the same message. I have gone to the "home" tab and there is no contact details?

    Cheers

    • Try again tomorrow. It's still the 13th in the US.

  • forgive my ignorance, but how to download these mp3?

    It's Winter…

    • +4

Feel free to wait 6 months, and see how that works out for you.

  • I can confirm that there is some sort of ip check, I could only download the unrestricted book. I'll give it a go via my work us-based VPN tomorrow.

    • Which one was the unrestricted one?

      • +1

        The Grapes of Wrath.

        From their website:

        Download The Eleventh Plague
by Jeff Hirsch (available in U.S., Canada, and Mexico only)

        Download The Grapes of Wrath
        by John Steinbeck

        • Yep just worked that our myself thank you :) I've never used overdrive before but it was a quick and easy install :) Grabbed Grapes of Wrath no problems then fired up hotspot shield and grabbed The Eleventh plague. You just need the VPN on to get the small ODM(overdrive file) to open into overdrive then you can turn the VPN off and overdrive will happily download it :D

Anyone reading this and wanting them, here's the links. You'll need overdrive installed.

  • Its always good to have that US VPN =)

  • In case anyone hasn't noticed, The Grapes of Wrath is an abridged version. Its only about 2hrs. The full version on Audible is over 20hrs.

The Eleventh Plague seems to be an unabridged book.

I've only listened to one audio book in my life. The reader was reading the book very quickly, in a monotone voice and I barely had time to digest.
Are all audio books like that? I've listened to Japanese drama cds and they were a lot more entertaining because they constantly include background sounds and use multiple voice actors who aren't monotone.

    • +1

No. Not at all. Certainly some of the free ones from Librivox are like that (but some are also excellent).

I'd suggest downloading these and trying them. Most professionally produced ones vary from being at least ok through to excellent.

The next two books are out. US VPN not required.

This week's books are now out. US VPN not required

    • Seems you do need a VPN for the first one. I get a 404 on it without a VPN.

      Website says:
      Download The Amulet of Samarkand
      by Jonathan Stroud
(No British Commonwealth or former British Commonwealth)

      • I didn't have any problem downloading them without a VPN. I'm on a Teltra cable IP. Guess it varies by IP whether you need one or not.

  • Anyone been able to get this weeks books? Tried both with, and without, VPN - no luck.

    • I got a 404 without a VPN but it worked with a VPN for me.

      Perhaps try again?

      • Finally got it working in IE. Didn't want to work in Firefox.

    • I'm using chrome and had to use a vpn

Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare, Read by a Full Cast (AudioGO)

    • The Shakespeare one says currently unavailable for me with and without a VPN.

      I'll try again later.

      • The second book is back now.

    • The second one is currently unavailable hopefully to come back later this is because there was an error where people who downloaded it were getting Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough instead of Shakespeare. Have you checked yours Chris what did you get ?

      • Have you checked yours Chris what did you get ?

I got Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough.

I didn't bother to check the title when it started downloading. It was just click link, is "something" downloading? Yep. Post. :D

No doubt they pulled the link when they discovered the wrong book was downloading.

    Dead Men Kill

Against his better judgement, Terry investigates her lead only to find himself sealed in a coffin en route to the next zombie murder his own.

VPN not needed for either book.

  • Seems to be some sort of hold up for the last two titles.

    • Our apologies! This week’s titles seem to have heard the ‘call of the wild’ and gone running off to parts unknown. Our host is working to recapture and relaunch this week’s downloads of: The Whale Rider and The Call of the Wild.

As soon as the issue is fixed, we will announce the titles via text and email. Know that when the titles launch, we will have them available for a full 7 days. Stand by!

Last two books are finally out!

    The Whale Rider
    By Witi Ihimaera

Eight-year-old Kahu, a member of the Maori tribe of Whangara, New Zealand, fights to prove her love, her leadership, and her destiny. Her people claim descent from Kahutia Te Rangi, the legendary “whale rider.” In every generation since Kahutia, a male heir has inherited the title of chief. But now there is no male heir, and the aging chief is desperate to find a successor. Kahu is his only great-grandchild–and Maori tradition has no use for a girl. But when hundreds of whales beach themselves and threaten the future of the Maori tribe, it is Kahu who saves the tribe when she reveals that she has the whale rider’s ancient gift of communicating with whales.

    The Call of the Wild
    By Jack London

Written in 1903, this classic brought Jack London to the world’s attention. It is the story of Buck, part St. Bernard and part Scotch shepherd dog, who shows the strengths of both breeds when he is stolen and sold off as a sled dog in the Yukon during the gold rush. A heartfelt story that appeals to both children and adults.

    Neither require a VPN.

Thanks to scupper (the OP). Now I've got another 20 audiobooks sitting in my pile of shame. :D
