Good Knife Sharpener

I'm looking for a new knife sharpener. I have a whetstone, which is great but I want something that is a bit easier to use for quick sharpening. My only requirements are:
under $100
not made in China

    Why not made in China?

If you have nice knives, continue with the whetstone and use a honing steel. If you have shit knives and don't care about the blade lasting forever, a tungsten or ceramic sharpener from Amazon will work fine. Honestly, they're all of similar quality and built the same. Just buy something that's popular on Amazon, return it if it's trash/falls apart.Lots of options below $20. You can probably splash out on a made in US or EU one if you like, but it'll be literally the same quality aside from some of the outside materials.

You can also buy sharpeners that have discs made from the same thing your whetstone is - that you also have to wet. These are gimmicks and will take as long, and require as much work - probably more than your whetstone. They're also more expensive.

      Why not made in China?

      Their leaders are very blunt.

Okay thanks. The whetstone is the best but it can take a bit of time.

I don't buy things made in China - or at least when there's a non-Chinese option.

Lol at not made it China.

  • Buy one of those long stick sharpener things for a quick sharpen, and then use the whetstone as well

Those are honing steel, sometimes referred to as "sharpening steel" which is not correct - as they don't actually sharpen. They simply straighten out the end of your blade so the edge lasts longer.

      • I agree. They are fine for a final touch up but no good at sharpening

Global recommends this one for its knives, made in Japan:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Global-Ceramic-Water-Sharpener-Mul…

I got it when it was on sale, and works well.

    • I have this and it works well. Good enough for me, anyway; but I'm also not the type of person who thinks there is a need for 5 different whetstones and creating a 45/55 degree angle edge depending on which hand you use. Its probably not what you are meant to use with Japanese knives, but I used it for my euro knives, japanese knives and the random plastic handle ones I've had since I was a uni student and came from kmart

The two stage one is probably all that most people need at $36

      • The Global website says: "Although designed for GLOBAL knives, this sharpener can be used for any knife brand with a 15-degree angle, which is a common angle for Japanese knives."

    • I've also used this and can confirm it works well. Big difference after sharpening.

    • I just had a look at a few reviews online and it looks good - with the added advantage of not being made in China.

  • There seem to be some knife experts here. I have thin victorinox knives, and due to bad sharpening, they have tiny "chips". What's the best way to remove the chips and make sure the blade is smooth?

  • Such a shame there's no threads or info around about how to sharpen your knives. ;-)
