Why Is My Dishwasher Squealing?

Seeking advice from the hive mind of OzBargain..

My dishwasher has started to make a high-pitched squealing/whining sound at a fixed point in its cycle.

This seems to occur when there is about 22 minutes left, which I believe is the start of the drying cycle.

It doesn’t seem to get any worse if I leave it on, and it just completes the cycle with no obvious ill-effects.

I’d like to have some idea of what it is / how serious it is before contacting Miele (because they have a very high fixed call-out charge).

  • Wind noise like when the seals are not as tight as before?

  • Cleaned out the filters to make sure nothing is trapped in there?

    • I cleaned out everything in the bottom area - the food trap, the water drain outlet, replaced a little o-ring washer in the non-return valve etc.

But I am now convinced that it’s the dryer part that is the problem.

Your drying fan is buggered or blocked…. Most decent dishwashers run a fan to 'dry' the dishes.

Quick google seems to say this happens a little bit on the Miele units and might even just be a blocked fan unit.

If you're handy you can try cleaning or replacing it yourself. If not…… pay someone to do it or buy a new dishwasher.

    • I am notoriously non-handy, usually having to pay a professional not only to fix the original problem, but also to repair the additional damage caused by my own efforts to fix whatever it was.

      Time to call Miele.

      • Depends how old it is - and how much a new one will cost to buy to replace it. You could easily drop $600 on call out and repair/parts - or put that to a new unit with a warranty.

Not an expert but sounds like a bearing, likely water pump or drying fan.

  • My Miele started doing that but it was 20 years old so I just got a new one.

    • When I went to book service online, their online “your products” lookup revealed that I bought it in 2006, so it’s now 16 years old.

      • Up to you if you think it is worth servicing. We replaced ours because of its age and we wanted the cutlery tray at the top rather than the basket at the bottom. The tray was a good step up.

We, also, found with our new Miele we were getting an error message, on completion. It turned out we had grit in the water that was restricting flow. We pulled all the hoses off and cleaned them out. That seemed to fix the error.

        Best of luck.

  • Would be a roller or a bearing. Had a similar noise from my cloth dryer, took it apart and the front bearing was shredded. Replacement was $60 a pair and fixed in a few hours.

  • Your dishwasher is squealing because the water is too hot
