Electric/Hyrbid Car Brand New - Vic

Im sick of the heartache my current 2010 car is giving me (going to miss you :'( ) so an in the market for a brand new hybrid of electric but very much bottom of the range.

Toyota seems to be my best option according to the websites of the big brands but seems quite pricy on carsales.

Keen to get some advice on best deals out there for brand new cars of this nature.

I very rarely drive (maybe 5 times a month) so open to other ideas too.

  • Uber and Myki

    • Or just get a small car, like a Hyundai i30, or something similar

You barely drive. Just use taxi/uber.

    • While I get that this has been suggested because it’s going to work out cheaper, but it’s not necessarily the best advice.

I’ve been assaulted by taxi and Uber drivers in the past, and flat out refuse to get into them alone.

I know this is a bargain website but safety is more important than money.

(I also know that not everyone has experienced what I have, so I’m not suggesting that it shouldn’t be considered by OP, but just trying to give another perspective)

I'm fairly sure that the OP would have said that they were against ubers/taxis, if they were against them….

You don't need a brand new car for maybe 5 times a month. Uber or GoGet should be sufficient. Spend your money elsewhere and enjoy life.

    • I've been doing this for the past ~8 years. Only downside is GoGet's recent price hike was justified by fuel price increases but they still hiked prices and cut the free km on their hybrids. But still, a recent 300km round trip in a day cost me about $170 in a corolla hybrid with less than 10k km on it. I only do that half a dozen times a year, plus spend maybe $100 a month on Ubers.

Through covid, WFH 4 days a week and the price insanity with fuel/cars I'm saving a fortune. Only real downside is picking up takeaway for dinner, delivery services are generally very unreliable. It just means I rely on the burrito place within walking distance instead. That and Uber are killing their loyalty program, that was paying for my Binge subscription.

Brand new? You’re gonna be waiting a year for a Corolla hybrid.

They’re probably pricey on Carsales because they’ve jacked the price up e.g. 2022 base model worth $40K if you order one is being sold for $49K with 200km on it …

  • Fek didn't know about the wait time. Whats the next best option?
Also what peoples thoughts on Toyota Access?

Go to a toyota dealer and find out what you can get and when. There's wait times on everything though and zero deals on new cars.

    • Don't take out a car loan unless you really have to e.g. if you're like me and have no car because it got written off.

5 times a month, buy a Hyundai Getz.

  • 5 times a month? Use Car Next Door or GoGet for when you really need a car and Uber/DiDi/etc for when it's only a small trip.

    BYD ATTTOOO 3

But yes uber would be more convenient/ cost effective.

Uber refused to operate outside capital cities last time I checked.

I travelled Ballarat to Miners Rest to Wendouree via Uber on a Sunday last month without issue.

        • Cool, I haven't checked for a few years. Seemed like a great application for Uber so it was disappointing they didn't allow it.

  • One of my mates got his hands on a hybrid toyota axio (not directly sold in aus market, but there are importers that sell used cars from japan market). He said full tank of 30 or 40L would last him 800-900km which is bonkers. The price was around 14-15k, has all the compliance, rwc done. If you are not keen on used cars, then may be corolla hybrid (i cant justify the price difference between corolla and yaris hybrid to consider yaris)

  • Toyota seems to be my best option

If you want hybrid then yes. They have a good track record in making these systems.

  • For 5 times a month

    Compare Uber fares

    Vs

Cost of buying a car + finance + wear and tear + rego + insurance + fuel/charging cost

  • What kind of car do you have that it's only 12 and giving you issues?

    • +1

Could it be an early Holden Cruze?

Nah, I don't think they would make it to 12.

    • Falcon

      • Assuming you had it brand new, did you get it regularly serviced?

        • Nah didn't get it brand new. I bought it from a bit of a Brah and I regret it now, but young me didn't know any better.
Its a comfy bar so have had a lot of good times too.

Servicing yep! It's at 180K ks now, its the time fords start to fall apart. Gas too.

        • They still have problems even with proper servicing.
