PayPal Payment Reversal

Hi Ozbargainers,

i have got a unique issue that i need some advice with. i paid for someones online account for my nephew as his birthday gift as hes obsessed with skins lol

he got into contact with someone online and i paid him via friends and family, everything was fine and my nephew has started using the account

paypal has got back to me and cancelled the transaction as they detected fraud and theres not much more info as it is an automated mail

i have never had this happened before when paying fnf on marketplace or gumtree so i told the seller id rather just return the account because im not sure if he uses it to scam other people

they have threatened to file a police report and go to court

not sure what i should do in this scenario should i resend the funds? or just wait for him to accept the account back

not too keen to get scammed later down the line but would also rather not deal with a police report

am i liable for anything if it goes to court?

Make sure you have your money back and then cut off all communications with the seller.

How long has it been since you paid?

    • im not the kind to be a dick so to be honest i dont mind returning their account and just finding a more legitimate one, its been a couple of days over the weekend

I'm not saying to be a dick, the seller can just change password and you'll lose access to the account.

The issue here is seller's account has been flagged by paypal for fraud so paypal will be combing through the account as well as IP address. If you resend the money, there's a chance your account will be flagged too.

        • yeah so i dont mind keeping the money but returning him the account, he doesnt seem to want to accept that so its a bit suspicious

So you buy stolen accounts, scam PayPal out of fees, take back a gift you've given, and you're worried about being a dick?

Police won't care, it's a civil matter. It would cost more than the account is worth to sue you, assuming the seller is even in this country.

There's no such thing as a "legitimate" account, it's against the ToS of pretty much all games to sell accounts. They are usually hacked accounts (i.e. stolen from other players) or botting accounts (i.e. cheating) and your nephew may find it removed from him if the game devs find out. So I wouldn't recommend he put any significant time/effort into the account unless he's prepared to lose it.

Most games with skins you can just buy the skins or loot boxes etc from the game itself, totally legitimately.

The Paypal fraud detection is possibly because the person had a lot of incoming transactions from different people, and isn't necessarily proof that he was scamming people. The high transaction volume is to be expected if the person is a professional seller of MMO gold & accounts.

That being said, selling accounts is itself dodgy, and it wouldn't be too unexpected if the account was somebody's hacked account rather than a legitimate sale. It all depends, really, on where you found the seller and how much you trust him. That is, how much online rep & past transactions etc he had already had on the place where you found him.

Yeah I reckon PayPal's "suspected fraud" merely means they suspect that the seller is defrauding PayPal of their fees. Sending via "Friends & Family" doesn't charge fees, but if you're selling something then the seller is supposed to have a business account so PayPal can collect their 3%.

Personally I'd send the account details back to the seller and block them. Your hands are clean.

they have threatened to file a police report and go to court

lol sure they would. IMO the fact that the seller is using PayPal instead of Osko/Bank transfer tells me they're not even in the same country anyway.

Though paypal has no seller protection on digital goods so they have no reason to pay for the 3% fee.

  • Apparently selling access is not as uncommon as I thought. This is obviously one example.

I have heard of people offering to buy your access say $1,500 for access into say unused Wise account (or in this case unused Paypal account) and that account ended up being used to scam people and the original owner became a money-mule.

  • The account and your PayPal is two different thing right? If the account you bought is fine, you change password and email address then you owe the seller the money as PayPal reversed.

Unless you gave old mate your name, address and phone number then the police won't do anything. Even if you did they likely won't do anything, they'll tell them to work it out with Paypal on why the transaction was reversed.

You offered to return the account, if he doesn't want to take it that's his problem.

More likely is the accounts being sold are a scam. Unless you've met the seller there's no real evidence they're even in Australia, and it could well be the accounts were hacked or were funded with stolen credit cards (or all those iTunes giftcards to pay tax bills). I'd avoid like the plague.

Account buying for video games is often against ToS (I can’t think of a game where it isn’t against ToS) and the game publisher / dev will ban the account if they find out that it was sold

I would recommend a normal gift

Do not resend the funds, if paypal thinks the transaction is fraudulent and you send the funds again they may think you are complicit and possibly suspend your account.

Last week someone in Victoria was in a shopping centre fender bender and gave someone my number. Back and forth, I said Google my number, you will see that I'm in Qld. Later that night she said she was going to file a police report. I told her to do it. I'm still waiting on the Victorian Police to contact me. Funny that. Police won't be interested in this at all.

Go to court? People have no f'ing idea.

.. and gave someone my number

It's possible that the phone number is just one digit out from the number it should be. It could be written funny and a digit is being read incorrectly.
