What to Do with Rust Developing on Car?

What do I do with rust that's started to develop on car body?

A small piece of silver paint (about half the size of 5 cent coin) came off the side of my car for unidentified reasons about 6 months ago. No dents. Now rust is starting to develop in the area. Any product recommendations or how-to guides before it gets worse?

Many thanks

EDIT: don't care about looks (its a corolla), just don't want it to get worse.

What kind of car and do you care about the appearance or only the functionality?

If you care you will need a pro to fix it.

If you don’t care that much just watch some YouTube videos and then fix it yourself.

Sounds like OP needs to use google and youtube to see how to fix rust on a car.

The rust you see is probably not all the rust there is… University of eWeTuBe is the place to look

I had similar on my old car, and I used Rust Remover Gel and then painted over it with a similar colour paint pen I got from Super Cheap. Note though that when I say old car, I mean it was a really really old car so appearance was a non issue.

Don't remember noticing the problem again after that, but I also can't remember exactly how long after that I got rid of the car anyway.

I took off as much rust as I could then I just spray painted over the rust with cheap metal paint I found at Bunnings.

join Toyotanation or toymods.org.au . You can get detailed advice about the rust areas per model. Some areas are close to important components (eg glass) so better to leave them.

Where exactly is the rust? Could be structural and your car won't crumple properly if you crash.

Is it relatively smooth? Or flaky and bubbly?

My guess is it’s just surface rust where the lint has come off and therefore not serious. Same sort of thing caused by stone chips. If it is just surface rust, rub it back to shiny steel and paint it with pretty much any paint you can find, including nail polish.

Flaky/bubbly indicates more serious problem that will require proper treatment.

    • Thanks for the pointers. It is surface rust only as you said.

  • New car?

      It’s just a flesh wound, it’s a corolla.

    • No 9 yrs old already

  • Thanks for the suggestions
