Parent Adding L+ Plates to Insurance. Which Comprehensive Insurer Is Competitive

Hi,

As a parent, i am now needing to add 2 Learners to a policy.

Im shopping around now but thought i'd see what the OzB brains trust has to say.

Im in Metro Sydney and Covid has stagnated my 19yo son from getting to his Provisional licence, and now my 17yo daughter is competently driving.

Can other parents share their experience with an indication of $ increase when they added 1 (or 2) Learner drivers to the list of drivers?

Thanks in advance!

$0, most (reputable) insurers cover L platers as standard.

    • Yep, this.

      • Yep - read your PDS though

There might be a $0 cost SO LONG AS you list them as drivers.Yeh - that's dumb….but

    • Thanks, i wasnt aware of this inclusion

with 'some' insurers the responsible party is the front seat passenger
CGU and NRMA are two of those (we still have one L plater on an NRMA policy)
    .

    • Totally makes sense. When a learner is in the drivers seat.

  • RAA wont list the learner as they arent regularly driving. Changes when on Ps.

Once they get the "P" you can choose to add them to listed drivers, and expect a $2000 plus increase in premium with an excess of $600 ( like in our case ), or you don't list them and then have an excess for and additional $2000 in case of fault.
I went for the second option ( not list them ) and increased the "Market Value" by $2000 ( to cover for the $2000 excess in case of totalling ).
Has the advantage, being the car not the newest anymore, that it is likely that insurance not too keen of writing it off.
Current market value: 7500, agreed market value 9500. Difference in yearly insurance fee: $150-$200.

    • brilliant option!

    • wow. My L plater is going to get his Ps soon. when I checked the increase in premium was only going to be 600ish. From around 300 to 900.

But I'm going to look into your system. Seems like it will be a very sane option

… with an indication of $ increase when they added 1 (or 2) Learner drivers to the list of drivers?

Can't you go online and do some quotes on insurance policies with and without the additional drivers?

    • I did and NRMA went from under $2k to over $7k.
Given what @brendanm said, i can omit them whilst they are learners.

  • I rang NRMA and they said they don’t list learners and they are covered. Budget direct took an extra premium when I added a learner (under $100 from memory).

p plater is a different story. I’ve added to one car the p plater will drive regularly at around $300 extra. I ditched budget direct as they won’t cover household members that aren’t listed and wanted a fairly stiff premium increase. Other car NRMA will cover any driver and so I’ve not added the p plater because it will only be driven a couple of times a year by them.

The more ‘premium’ policies will usually cover anyone but want you to list regular drivers (more than once per year according to one policy). Cheaper insurers may restrict some drivers they will cover to try to keep premiums down - check the PDA
