  • Salad spinner same price on Amazon and has been for a log time

    • I bought it from Amazon for $45 yesterday, it's still listed as $45 now whereas with eBay plus it's $35.10.

      • +36

They said log time, so technically they wood be correct

        • +15

Only if you buy tree of them

        • Ahh yes true my bad. Was just bummed out I bought it yesterday for $9.90 more! Why wood I do that?

@Bargainendorphins: Take a leaf out of my book and next time use a credit card with price protection.

I have these tongs from a past deal … and like all tongs the hinge pin which seems to be aluminium has eroded away making what is other wise perfectly good tongs unusable. I feel like this is 'planned obsolescence' by tong companies.. which use such a soft metal that will degrade here?

    • +19

      conspiracy by big tong

      • +3

Don't call them out directly they'll come for you.

      • I am laughing but because it pisses me off as well. The critical pin goes chalky and soft from dishwashing and they explode apart mid use.

        Bloody Biiiiig Tonnnngg!!!!!

    • +2

What's great is when the pin comes out, goes in your salad, you don't realise it and blame aldi, then aldi investigates, comes back and tells you what it is. Aldi were amazing.

      • +2

Probably happens lot… they must have a list of 'things people find in salad that's not our fault'

    • We use the Joseph Joseph duo lockable tongs.

Nylon and safe for use with non stick stuff, they also have feet half away along the shaft so you can set them on a surface without the grabbing end touching the surface.

Had them for a few years and no issues with the hinge pin.

They are also miles better than the metal tongs with removable rubber grips, which I hate because they get filled with gunk and it's a pain to clean

      • I have the Williams Sonoma tongs and they're also ace. Easy to clean, solid mechanism, nothing flimsy and feels like I could pick up a brick with them

        • @Domingo i see 2 more pins holding the end parts together besides the big hinge one, is that right?

      • i looked at the picture of that tongs, how long have you had them and put them in the dish washer? it does looks like it would fail the same.

for many tongs, the failing pin corrodes away because it's not made of good stainless steel (or stainless steel at all).

my $2 tongs from coles lasts about 100-200 washes in the dish washer. not bad stats, but these things supposed to last way longer than that.

I have a set of old tongs from years and years ago. The pin fell out. So I dug around in my nits and bolts trays and found a long and thin enough bolt to go through it. Fixed that but it’s since become rusty, that’s ok though. Still works.

    • Replace with a stainless bolt and nyloc when it fails.

    • When it says nylon is that soft or hard rubber/plastic

    • Sounds like a common theme here is that people put them in the dishwasher. We don't put ours in the dishwasher and they basically last forever.

      • I'd also not be hesitant to say that the items could be made to be dishwasher safe if they chose to.

I wonder if a long stainless steel pop rivet could be used since that seems to be just what is used? Just figure the cost to get a pack will cost half the price of a new one .. but i'd have a life time supply.

        • Probably, but there are a lot of things that we don't trust/put in the dishwasher like knives (not chef knives), chopsticks, certain bowls etc. A couple of tongs doesn't really add to the washing up load so we just do them all by hand.

          • @ozbs25: hand washing is counter productive, since it uses more water than a dishwasher - this is a measurable fact.
the problem is that the failing part isn't made with a reliable material. I replaced the hinge with a normal stainless steel screw + nut and it lasted longer.

it's your lifestyle choice to be standing there at the sink to wash dishes btw, but don't ignore the fact that the product advertises to be dishwasher safe and stainless steel, yet the most fail able part seems almost like it pits and corrodes like aluminium.

            • @slowmo: I'm not concerned about the water. Should I be? Maybe? Our cutlery is supposed to be stainless steel but the knives rusted when we put them in our dishwasher so we just hand wash them now. We have a lot of things that we don't want to put in the dishwasher or just don't fit well so we end up hand washing a lot.

              • @ozbs25: fwiw, there are different grades of stainless steel to begin with.

none of my stainless steel knives rust in the dish washer - be it furi or some asian brand i got from the asian shops. so i don't know whats wrong on your end. the only knives i hand wash are the carbon steel knives.

tongs, i use and wash everyday, at least once, and a few pairs of them. all the brands i come across pit and corrode the same way as the rivets of other 'pots/pans' of 'branded' ones.

also, i like how you can always get the dishwasher to wash it at 65-75 Celcius water… not quite possible to do so with bare human hands.

                to each their own.

                • +1

@slowmo: I know about the different grades of stainless steel. For whatever reason these knives would rust so we hand wash them now. We just have a lot of things that just don't fit into our dishwasher so we just do it all. It's not that big a deal.

You can get hotter than 65-75 degrees in the sink. We often boil water and wash our stuff using the boiled water. My wife usually does that stuff. She really cares about the way certain things are washed. I just let her do her thing.

                  • @ozbs25: If it works for you, good on you.

Point I was making is quality of metal matters quite a bit when washing it on dishwasher so I’m not sure why it digress to about your personal preference to hand wash especially your wife’s and not your own? Lol.

Not everyone has a wife/partner or want to hand wash. The problem is the item in question. See a recurring theme there in all your replies?

                    • @slowmo: We both hand wash. We like our stuff and prefer to look after it. We are both pretty pedantic about things. She does have her ways with certain things though like boiling water and washing all the things that have touched raw meat.

Do you empty your dishwasher as soon as it's done? If not that's probably why your tongs aren't doing well.

                      • @ozbs25: the tongs are fully bone dry when it's done. unless i unintentionally left a container wrong way up, all my dishes are dried up in a few minutes after the door is opened when the cycle finishes.

as said much earlier, it's the metal used for the frequently failing part.

  • Some good prices but nothing I really want or need. I want to see if the OXO sweep set is any good but it's generally super expensive.

  • Not sure who is matching who but the salt grinder is also $28 on Amazon (delivered if you're Prime). Cheapest ever according to the Camels.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/OXO-Good-Grips-Grinder-Silver/dp/B…

    • …although I missed the recent P&S deal for $28 - dang!

      • I don't know if we'll ever see them at that price again. Almost seems like a price error although it does look like it was at that price for a little while.

I have the salad spinner and it just does not get rid of as much water as the Zyliss I had prior. Unfortunately, the string eroded on the Zyliss. The OXO looks like it will last forever but I hate it. Looking for something that combines the best features of both?

    • +2

I have read the reviews of the salad spinner and surmised:
      * It's quite small due to the centre column in terms of usable space
      * The gears are made of plastic so it can be unreliable (probably worse on the larger, heavier one)

The biggest issue for me on the traditional ones is keeping it tied down while turning as it gets quite tiring. I thought the push button one here would help but it seems unreliable….. so in the end I'm looking at this one:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Avanti-Crank-Handled-Salad-Spinner…

As it allows for a much more natural (or easier) motion of spinning, and easier to hold down with other hand.

Bought the garlic press, hope it’s better than Joseph Joseph

    • The oxo garlic press is quite good. Mine atill going strong after 5 yrs.

  • Has anyone actually found a pair of tongs that don't fall apart after 10 uses?

    • +1

I have had 2 "Coles Silicon Head Tongs 30cm" last for several years at least now, going through the dishwasher every day or 2. Spending more doesn't seem to be worth any extra quality here, previously I was specifically saving the receipts knowing I would likely be returning them.

  • Got a few things, thanks OP

  • Just checked and nothing is $0 even with eBay plus

    Misleading title

    • It’s $0 delivery fee which is free.

      Maybe Misreading title?
