Yes but to be honest the movie and the book together is an amazing combination. As is very often the case, the book is better than the movie only because of the additional detail and overall depth, however the movie obviously brings the visuals and the world to life extremely well.

The movie also makes way more sense after reading the book. There are heaps of tiny details in the movie that go over your head until you read the book (I noticed this on re-watching).

      • I went book first this time around (around 20 years after watching the original/playing the video games) and definitely enjoyed the film more after reading and understaning more details/lore.

I kept reading (ebooks on Kindle) and am about to finish God Emperor. Not sure we'll ever see films for the whole saga but definitely worth reading through.

  • If I buy this book do I get the full rights to the story?

    • +10

Yes, full rights to read the story

Not a fan of movie tie-in covers but it is a cheap price for an amazing book.

    • +1

Just be thankful it's not one of those Now a Motion Picture covers which is just the poster for the movie. It might even be a sticker.

    • +1

Especially when there's this beautifully designed cover from the last publisher.

Worth the extra money just to have it on your shelf

This is my favourite story of all time, but I believe the best way to read it first is to listen to the audiobook (especially if your not a big reader).

The audiobook on audible has each key character individually performed by a different voice actor, making it much easier to distinguish which character is which.

  • .. may the force be with you …

    • They use spice instead of force in this one

      • +1

My favourite part is when Dune asks "please sir, may I have some more spice?"

And then Hal says "I'm afraid I can't do that Dune"

  • Coming up as $14 in store.

For me, the best sci fi book of all time and top 10 in my all-time favourites. And the rest of the Frank Herbert-written ones just as good. The co-authored ones are really very good too. I've seen most of the series while shopping for a 'friend' in Vinnies, at about $4 used but in good condition. This most recent movie version ep.1 is very good - this is a tough story to make a movie out of - ask Sting. One of the few book series I reckon you could read even if you know the entire story, and same for the movie.

  • Just downloaded this the other day actually. Hyped to read it finally, been one of those books thats been on my list for too long
