Moving Interstate and Private Health Premium Increased by 28%?

I am with Bupa and only has 'extras'.

When I moved from NSW to WA, changed the address they changed the premium from $47 to $61 per fortnight, is this normal?

    Yep, different prices by state…

    Most insurance works that way…

The numbers don't lie; Bupa knows you are 28% more likely to die in your new suburb compared to your old one.

This is health insurance. If you die, you no longer need the cover.

And they no longer get their premiums, so they need to charge him 28% more upfront to get the same value.

  • It's just sheddier in WA so they know you are more likely to do stupid things for fun or drink yourself to death.

  • Sometimes, it's just additional state levies or taxes.

    • Ambulance cover is also different for each state. Some states cover the ambulance costs and others don't so premiums are affected accordingly. WA is one of the states that doesn't cover ambulance for residents.

  • Basically. Found quoting between NSW and Vic was about 20% dearer in Vic. They don't really explain why but some propeller head has probably worked out the math

According to MBP, the reason why VIC is dearer in PHI is because VIC has far more injuries due to the fact VIC is a sporting capital.

  • Its because you make more in the mines..

  • We were with HBF for PHI (hospital and extras) and car insurance when we lived in WA. When we moved to Tasmania a few years ago, we changed providers for both as HBF's PHI premiums skyrocketed as we'd moved interstate, and they refused to continue to provide car insurance (once CGU took over the general insurance arm, their service and cover went downhill anyway).

    • did you have to tell them? or how did the find out? you moved to tas, do you think you could say you live in WA

      • Yes, you have to tell them. They're hardly going to believe someone still lives in WA if they're putting in PHI claims for providers in Tasmania on an ongoing basis, and I'm sure it would be pretty easy for an insurance company to find out that you're living elsewhere, with the resources they have available.

        • I have a friend who is claiming extras all the time no issues, being in VIC
